| I just need a few tips on how to make a set up for a ballyhoo. I know what the end en result is supposed to look like but i don't know exactly what size hooks, line or swivels, etc...... I think I have most the tackle for it already but if anyone has pictures or knows of a website that may shows a video of how to do it, that would be a great help. I am trying to go out Saturday what is the best place to troll that isnt to far out. THANKS

i like the pin rig set up with the small springs...an 8' leader of 150 momoi smoke leader material and something similar to a mustad 7691 8/0 and a 100 swivel..a 3/8 chin weight should be fine unless it gets a little rough out there......im sure there are far more expierenced people to offer their advice but i at least wanted to share mine...also leader size should be determined as to species targeting..

| I would suggest you search the internet until you find what you are comfortable with. There is a North Carolina site and below is one that is TX based. I prefer not using a pin rig which is the more traditonal rig as Whites are very skittish. I use 7/0 to 8/0 hooks either Mustad or Owner Jobu hooks. I like the Jobu hooks as they are sharp, do not rust, and I do not have to continue to sharpen them making their expense worth my while. Once I position the hook in the bait, I wrap the strongest copper wire available once around the gills, twice through the eyes, then up through the mouth, break off the bill and haywire the balance of wire around the bill and leader. I found some videos on You Tube about rigging ballyhoos and they all use beaded chain. I've been reading threads here and nobody is talking about beaded chain. These videos looked like they were filmed in the 1980s so maybe this was the old way. Does anyone use the beaded chain like they show in the videos or are these videos outdated?
If not, what do you use in its place?

| The beaded chain is old school and they snap when you hook a good fish so they are useless. Stay clear of them for sure. Learn to rig without them.

| I am by no means an expert. first, you need to decide if you are J hooking or circle hooking. J hooking is easy to rig and swim. Buy you some islanders blue and white, pink and white, blue and pink black and purple. Those are probably the best 4 colors to start with. Small mold crafts work as well. Next use 250lb Jinkia about 12ft. The only reason I say 12 is because sure as crap, as soon as you put a short leader out there, that big girl is going to come up. Next, I use a mustad 9/0 hook. They are expensive, but they are sharp as crap and very sturdy. Put a piece of stiff wire in your crimp above the hook and bend it UP OPPOSITE OF THE POINT OF THE HOOK. As far as securing the ballyhoo down, you can use copper wire or a spring. Both have pros and cons.
