In early July, we lost what was probably a 40# King 45 minutes into the fight at boatside.  We lost it because I was short handed and decided it was time to "go for it."  I know how to dip rods, follow the fish, go bow first, and etc.  But it is still bugging me that we lost a good fish.  Any suggestions or experiences on how to handle a good fish, communicate with inexperienced crew, and/or handle a CC while acting as captain and deckhand would be greatly appreciated.  I would be especially curious as to how you guys who catch large YFT from CC wire, gaff and board them 'cause they never give up.

I can't tell you much about big tunas or marlin but for all smaller game, including kings over 50 and very large AJs, patience has always worked for my crew.  We typically fish dead from behind gas rigs.  Patience and a learned fish-driving technique have helped us put many impressive fish in the boat with only two and occasionally just myself.  I fish a 23' CC with outboards which are a little noisy so I don't put people on the bow if we are chasing but rather beside the console an slightly ahead so they can tell me where the fish is headed.  There is lower freeboard here so the bottom of the boat is less of a problem if the fish runs quickly underneath and up on the other side.   We don't put anymore pressure on a fish than we need, or less for that matter, and that is determined by what we are fishing around, you really just have to develop a feel for what is going on at the other end of the line.  Work the fish to yourself in a timely manner and have a good, accurate gaff man ready and sink the steel when the time is right.  A KILL shot helps with bigger fish, right in or behind the eyes/back of the head is great cause you can use the kick of the fish to help get it out of the water and that head won't pull off.

And unless you are using bass gear a 45# king takes no more than 10 minutes to thoroughly whip and boat, after that you are morelikely fighting the dead weight of a nearly deceased fish.

Magic, it sounds like you're doing it right. Odds are your going to lose one now and then. One thing I find helpful with bigger fish is to loosen the drag when they get close to the boat. This usually helps in two ways, 1 IF/WHEN the gaff man misses or 2 the fish tries to make his boatside run, the hook will not rip out or the line part. Good Luck and remember you win alot but only lose a few!!!
