I've been down to Bayfront several times this week on my girlfriend's lunch break.  We usually sit and eat there.  Anyway, the inlet that extends from the bay toward Main St. has been holding some nice sized bait along the wall in the back.  I guess the afternoon sun warms that water and brings them in.  A fair bit of the bait is even large enough to net.  The times I've seen the bigger baits, something has been chasing them.  Blues, white trout? I just see something slashing through.  If someone works downtown it might be worth a lunch hour trip with some artificials to get in a little "urban fishing".

Probably bluefish or maybe spanish. I have seen some really chunky bluefish tearing up baits around the boats in the slips. In the summer sometimes there are some really large spanish in there. Sometimes when the bay is all blowed up you can slip into that protected water and do really good. You just have to stay out of the way of the boats that dock there.

Jason and wrighttackle,

Thanks for the tip. We're always lookin for bait. Gotta get a new bait net though. I'm down to using my pinfish trap for live bait.

Don't you think the water's too chilly for spanish to be around?

Back before the net ban I saw the biggest haul of big spanish I have ever seen brought in at the 17th avenue launch in January. It was freezing and this gill net boat came in and it was unbelievable. Four and five pound spanish still in the net. I used to watch from the old bay bridge those guys making sets along the new bridge. It was sickening to watch them catch those big spanish. Recreational use of mullet gill nets never bothered me but the kind of carnage these guys created was a shame.
