I was fishing today in the Bayou Texar area. I was over to the east side, south of cervantes bridge where it goes along some docks and woods and is kind of shallow. I was jig fishing for specks, reds, or whatever felt like gettin caught. As I was drifting

around, I all of a sudden noticed a bright bobber in the water about 50 yards away. I paid it no mind at first, but then when I looked in that direction a few seconds later it was gone. Then it reappeared. I looked on shore and saw no rods or people fishing so I figured there was a fish or

something attached to it. I trolled over and low and behold it slowly went away from my boat, and even went below the surface. I was going to try and grab it with my hands but could never get close enough.

Good thing I didn't. I made a few casts at the bobber instead, hoping to snag it. Keep in mind I still did not know what was on the other end yet. On my second cast, I managed to snag the line. As I reeled slowly it got very tight, and then all hell broke loose. It made about 5-6 good runs.

My 430ssg drag was set all the way!! It turned out to be a great fight. I managed to net it up, and right away measured it up at 24 inches. Not a huge bull, but just right. In the cooler it went and I even kept the bobber. If the person who this happened to wants their bobber back, just

identify the color and size and I'll be happy to return it. As for the fish, well, lets just say it was pretty darn good!!

Fishing the Aquarium

I have 3 reports but I will just post them in the same one here. Sorry for being long & late. :)

Nearshore, July 15th - Took my mom, aunt, and cousin saltwater fishing for the first time while they were visiting from NC. My mom and cousin did GREAT. My aunt on the other hand spent most of the day bent over the side of the boat. lol. = Fished the 18s = triggers, snapper & biggest was 18", red lips, white snapper (big & small), doctorfish (pretty!), mangrove, small gag, small strawberry, 2 seven foot hammerheads swam by as we were packing up to head in (they were loooong!!). All fish were caught on live threadfins, old boston mackerel, or squid.

The gang heading out.

One of Becky's Triggers.

Inshore, July 19th - Fished a public pier up the street = had the place to ourselves = HOT as HADES today = I had to pull my moo moo up over my head for some shade!! Finally had to jump in the h2o to cool off. We caught small drum on beef jerky, pinfish on small pieces of squid, saw what resembled trumpetfish/cornetfish (?), 2 small flounder, plenty mullet (big & small).

Surf, July 19th - Fished the Pointe this afternoon = caught all kinds of smaller fish = tiny grouper, pinfish, grunts, squirrelfish, spotted tails + more. Mostly grassy over there and full of jellyfish. As soon as a squid tipped sabiki went down we had a fish of some sort on. We set some of the smaller pinfish and grunts out on the bottom but nothing took them. A guy fishing nearby us landed himself a small ray.

Wayne and Andrew bag the INSHORE SLAM...July 19th 2008 fishing report by capt wes

we set out to get an inshore slam today. first stop was the grass flats where dad picked up a nice speck on top water. then we went to the bay where we bounced up a nice flounder.

we had live pinfish so off to the pass. we made 4 drifts with no luck when andrew said "i have something tapping my line". As usual she brought her beach chair and a novel and I brought my bait net, live well, and a rod. I hit a trifecta of trash right off the bat- stingray, catfish, then skipjack. I stuck two short specks in a dock light on the way in which of course were released. I think the stingray was pregnant- don't they give birth to live young? Looks like this one was close. I hope I'm not losing my forum cred with these girlfriend posts, but we have fun and snap a decent photo once in a while so I figure why not share. Might give someone some ideas for some family/significant other fun. I threw a topwater for a while with no luck. Trash fish trifecta on live pinfish with slip sinker. Dock trout on freelined pinfish. CD player in boat rocking out thanks to Jeremy at The Maintenance Shoppe. Best money I ever spent was either that portable grill or the stereo in the boat. Here's some pics, and thanks for reading and replying.

Morning Reds

Fished about 6 hours today, the RED bite was on 7:30-8am; after that it was hunt and peck for specks and assorted junk fish. My usual honey hole was dry today.
Found a small school of reds mixed with mullet over a sandy point, they hung around for about 1/2hour....5 solid strikes, 4 fish on, small one lost, the other 3, 19", fattie 22" that went over 3.5lbs, and rat 16" red. if i had someone with me, I feel we could have knocked off 5 or 6 fish; but, I like to play mine and enjoy the fun.

PS: POWER POLE - I don't think I would have had success today if I didn't have the power pole to help me postion and stay on the fish quietly!!

Dock Lights @ Night, Reds & Specks

Just another report for anyone that might live close to the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay... I met my buddy Josh at the ramp at 7:00pm. We slung our cast nets and loaded up about 5 dozen shrimp right there at the ramp. Hit the water about 7:45 and hit a reef about 10 till 8:00 waisting a little time for the sun to completely set. We had a few bites but no fish waiting. Hit our first dock light at around 8:45. We had to work for our fish the first couple hours on a extremely setting low tide. We picked around and landed maybe half dozen small specks. We kept the boat moving from dock light to dock light in hopes bigger and better fishing. Once the low tide had completely set and the high was starting to roll in with some waves, the fishing exploded. We were using most of all, live shrimp under a popping cork, with a gulp or D.O.A. every now and then to keep from going through the live ones so fast. We probably caught a half dozen or so on the artificial. To make a long story short, we had to ride back to the ramp to sling the nets some more to reload on shrimp again. After about 3 or 4 dozen later we road back out to finish slaughtering them. Finally left around 2:45am to get some sleep.

All in all: about 3 or more dozen specks, 1 or more dozen white trout, 13 rat reds, 2 flounder

(ALL FISH RELEASED TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY!!)

Josh below holding one of his rat reds!

Josh below letting the first of his two flounder go!

Me below holding one of my rat reds!

Me below hold a speck!

Josh below holding a speck!

We didnt set any records in poundage, but had fantastic action all night!

Thanks, Jason

<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; So i went yesterday and bought her a shimano setup. 6 ft rod with a sedona 2500 on it. Not a bad setup for a newbie. So i took her out this morning to his hole never the navy base. As soon as her shrimp hit the water she was hooked up on a red. Not long after she caught 2 nice black drums , and a flounder. So needless to say i think my girl is getting it down..i only caught one flounder not even big enough to keep:banghead

Monster Inshore Snapper

Caught this monster snapper last night fishing for sharks in Pensacola Bay. She tipped the scales at just over 27 lbs!

Delacriox trip

Justed wanted to share my Ridfish pic here, full write up further down under (inshore out of area). I worked a zara spook topwater lure along the bank and my daughter had a scooby doo rod and reel with an earthworm on a # 6 hook. 2 minutes after she cast out her rod went crazy. It was all my wife and daughter could do to get this 2 lb or so mullet into the boat. I always heard they were pretty hard to catch on a rod and reel and I didnt get another hit the rest of the night.

Oh, we also had a curious six foot gator swimming around for about an hour until dark. Took a picture with a disposable camera as my other daughter had my digital. No pics to post at this time.

Hearing all of you guys post is giving me offshore boat fever. I was looking an older Mako today. Trying to convince my better half its time to upgrade a bit. :)

2 huge trout 2 nights in a row.!!!!!

intercostal water way, 12am, as i am driving over the bridge i see a massive amount of something boiling under a light, i go down there only with a gotcha and the first 15 cast were lady fish,But i dont quit, i begin to work the dock looking for a red or a trout, and i wasnt gonna leave til i got one. 10 minutes later bam!!!!!!!!! a 26 inch fatty. Fishing with small menhaden that I netted this morning, both on the bottom and fished on jigheads.

Had one hook-up that bent the rod over double and about a 3 foot fish immediately jumped out of the water. His wife is outta town, so he was happy to do so. I usually do my inshore fishing down at NAS because I'm without a boat, so that is where we headed. To say I know something about fishing down here would be a big fat lie. I tie a hook on the end of some powerpro, attach that to a swivel and put a 1 oz. egg sinker above that. Throw some fresh shrimp above that and let the trash fish have their way with me!
Today was no different, we ended up catching some ladyfish which are always good for a fight, and a pufferfish. Then I hooked into something that put up some fight, when it came to the surface, I thought it was a big hardtail, only to realize it was a small Jack Crevalle! I thought that was pretty cool, never hooked up with one of those before. Still feeding the pinfish, when my line goes tight, I start reeling, my drag starts going off....this is no pinfish! I played with it for a bit, then got it to the surface and saw my first Redfish! I was excited now, I got it up, took some pics and sent it back to the sea, it was undersized anyway, but still fun. I ended the day with a 16" flounder that DIDN'T make it back to the sea. I'll be baking that bad boy later. I'll add pics when my buddy emails them to me. Thanks for reading and sharing in my excitement!

And last but certainly not least.....

Thanks for all the support and congratulations, when I get one big enough, I'll take hit you up for some recipes.

07/14/08 Pass Report

Not a whole lot to report. The event is free and there is a free buffet provided by Flounders. Flounders has really stepped it up on the food with boiled shrimp, potatoes, fried green beans and other tasty items. Also 2 for 1 drinks!! Lots of giveaways and a free raffle with some awesome prizes including a free shallow water redfish guide trip with me. Tony Blanton and I will also be demonstrating the Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchor and its importance in redfishing success.

The topic is redfish(18-27"), and Chris Phillips will start with dock and structure fishing. For round two, I will discuss shallow water techniques for both blindcasting and sight fishing. I will "spill the beans" on productive areas, successful techniques and tricks as well as which baits to use in different situations. You'll learn more about redfish than you ever thought possible!!

Hope to see everyone there!!

3 Mile Bridge Sunday Night 7.14.08

I decided to take the kids out to 3 mile last night to look for a few reds. It has been about 3 weeks since I have been out there. We have been doing the skinny water thing in the bayous lately so we decided to go deep last night. We left the house around 6, and we had a full crew. Myself, my Dad, A.J., Anna, and Chan all on my little glastron. We drove through some sprinkles on the way to 17th, and I was starting to worry. However, the night was perfect. We launched the boat at about 6:45, light wind and a SMOOTH bay!!!!:clap I pulled up to a great spot, we had the bridge to ourselves, and Dad tossed in the Anchor. I pulled out the rods, with 3 inch new penny shrimp for the kids, a power bait mullet for myself, and Dad was using a 5 inch sapphire jerk bait. Almost as soon as her bait got wet, Anna was on with a nice Keeper White trout. :clap Next it was A.J. and he landed another nice trout, followed closely by Chan who Reeled in a hefty 15 incher. :clap We all continued to catch trout after trout as the sun was sinking down. Soon the bridge lights were on and the skippies moved in. The kids always love to catch the skipjack, due to the fact that they act so crazy when they get hooked, and we caught our share for sure.
Here is Anna holding one. Take a look at that expression. Well I have been promising to put the kids on some bull reds all year, and so far all I had gotten them onto was a few 15 to 18 inch small fries in the bayou, until last night. I pulled out the big gun, my Daiwa 7000c with 30 lb test, put a 4 inch natural Gulp shrimp on it, tossed in off the back of the boat and set it in the rod holder. I caught a big trout or two on it, and was about to try a different bait when BAM....pole bows over and drag starts screaming!!!! I snatch it up, adjust the drag, and call for Chan. He comes to the back of the boat and takes the rod and his eyes got huge. This fish definitely has some size to it, so I help him fight it to the boat. After an epic 10 min battle, Dad nets it. It is a whopping 33-34 inches, and close to twenty pounds.

A quick release, and the Gulp shrimp goes back out for round two. A few minutes later, the Daiwa bows up again, and I hear anna screaming I wanna catch it. So I tell her to come on back. I hand her the rod, and she fights hard. When she gets him to the boat he spooks and goes down and under us, so she hands me the rod so I can get him away from the extremely sharp prop. I give her the rod back, and a few minutes later I net her first red!

Wooohoo slot size!!! That makes my Dad smile (he loves to eat red fish) It was 26 inches and around 7lbs. :clap Unfortunately He destroyed the Gulp, so I put on a new one, and back in the water it goes. Not too much later we get another huge hit on the Daiwa, this time the fish missed the hook and bit the Gulp in half. That was the last 4 inch natural shrimp I had, so I stick a 4 inch nuclear chicken on. I caught a few more white trout with it, but no more reds on the Daiwa. About an hour later Chan hung what sounded like a jet ski the way it was running drag. I heard Dad....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....Dad....ZZZZZZZZZ....HELP.....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

So I took the rod from him and walked him to the back of the boat, and handed him the rod back just as it went pop. That was the last big fish of the night, and we called it quits around midnight. The kids had a great time, and I am thrilled that I got them on some big reds. Don't worry A.J. you get the first one next time I promise. We slayed the white trout all night long, and between the 5 of us we probably caught over 100 fish. Here are a few pics from when we got home.

Check out that mess of fish...those kids slayed 'em!!!!!!

Good luck and Good Fishing.

Glastronix

Alabama Point Blue Fish

Absolutely killed the blue fish Monday afternoon. The early-morning bite looked promising. Lots of bait and fish hitting the top. But we only pulled out a couple small trout, one blue, and one skip. Fish were caught in 2-6 foot of water. Moved into shallow grass and caught two fine looking reds. The first was 24" and weighed 5lbs. Sorry no picture. The second was 30" and weighed 8.5lbs. Both fish were caught in 1-2ft. of water. The weather was mostly cloudy and rained on us for about 30 mins after we caught the fish. Nothing else for the rest of the day. Got off the water around 11:30. The bites were really stretched out...so if your not getting hit stick with it. The bait was everywhere. Loads of mullet in shallows getting busted pretty much all day.

All fish were caught on gold 1/4oz Johnson Spoon, Sidewinder spoon, and Chug Bug. Big fish was released and the smaller one was dinner.

3 Inshore/Nearshore trips

I had three trips in the last two days and we did a combination of inshore and nearshore fishing. Thursday morning I had John and Bill for a half day trip and we decided to do some nearshore bottom fishing. We spent or day in 60-70 feet of water fishing live cigar minnows and threadfins. We had a nice grade of snapper for our limit and a really nice grouper. The grouper gave john two chances, breaking him off the first try. We re-rigged and went right back down and he ate again, so john got the fish and I got my hook back. We caught lots of snapper from 16-18" trying to box 4 nice fish. That afternoon I had Greg and his family and we spent the afternoon in the bay because of the wind that got up. We caught a dozen mangroves from 12-14" and a couple redfish a little too big. This morning I headed back out to bottom fish on the beach with Tim and his son Trent. It was a bit choppy for a bay boat early and a storm was moving in from the south so we kept the first 4 keepers that hit the deck and headed back into the bay where we caught a few oversized redfish. Here are a few pictures for the last couple days.

The chimney off scenic

Have any of you tried it recently ?? Back to fishin' ended up catchin a few mullet and a 17 3/4 inch redfish.

Blue Crabs r-in East Bay

Got a couple traps off two docks behind the house and started catching them 3July. We left the ramp around 6 am this morning. This is the first thing we saw coming out of Navy Point ....

Kind of hard to tell it from the pics but there was a little funnel cloud. You can see it just to the left of the big patch of rain.

I slowed to let the kids get a good look at this and then we proceeded on to the pass where we began trolling cigs with a blue/white duster. We trolled around 3 or 4 hours losing two fish and finally catching the last one that hit. We took several pics of the storms around us....

We continued trolling back into the bay where we switched up our baits so the kids could catch some hardtails. They must have caught a couple of dozen between them. I live here in Fairhope and have launched the last couple of nights and fished the dock lights here on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. The fishing has been unbelievable! At every dock I came to the specks were feeding hard on the top for shrimp. I lost count but im betting last night I landed upwards to 40 or 45 specks before calling it a night. If I werent catching big ones I would move on to the next light. I freelined live shrimp, just line, hook, and shrimp "lots of action". I had good luck with the white D.O.A. too, holding the rod tip high letting it skim across the top with a little jerking action. They were blowing up on it like crazy. I just thought I would put it out there for those of you who may live nearby and would like to jump on a little action. Thanks, Jason

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Wolf Bay Lights.

Wolf Bay Lights---not much of a report---7/11/08
Launched at Wolf Bay Lodge at 3:30 am--slick-- very low water--no fish popping under the lights. One, anchored very near the wreck, had 3 guys on it and were all bowed up together(king mackerel and maybe a jc that broke off). They were catching small bait there with Sabikis and throwing them freelined into the water. Me with a very lively frisky blue runner with a blue/silver duster got no action slow trolling and bumping over 45 minutes all around the wreck. Maybe they were chumming and matching the hatch whereas I was not.

I saw a rare bird for here on the Panhandle in my experience: a frigate bird soaring overhead. Common in South Florida but I have never seen one here. Has anyone else seen one here?

How are others doing with kings this last week?

Rosemary Beach (Near Panama City Beach) Fishing Report-Any suggestions?

So I 've had no luck surf fishing over the past few days and even tried my small boat in Lake Powell with the same results.
