what am i doing wrong?

Went to Freeport Thursday night wanted to put in closer to mid bay bridge but ramp was sanded in and the bay was kickin. Wound up in Alaqua Bayou there was tons of bait fish but I only saw 1 undersize flounder. I have went gigging many times and the most I have gigged is 3. All you guys make me jealous. Phillips Inlet is the only place I have ever killed any. If any of you guys could point me in the right direction around Panama City and Destin it would be greatly appreciated. I would even go around Pcola I don't care. I live in Enterprise Alabama and it would make the ride back home alot better with a box full of flounder. Right now I am running 4 250w halos. I may need to try 500w. Would they penetrate the stained water better? I just don't want to buy a new generator. I have a little 2 stroke 1000w and I love it best $150 I ever spent.

Hit the water with Chris around 6:30 and tried to catch a few fish before it got dark. Not much luck with that. We tried 5 or 6 different cuts and bars for 2 1/2 hours, used up 2 bags of gulp and Chris caught the only desirable fish, a 13" flounder.

Around 9:15 is was finally dark enough to turn the lights on. Tide was a -1.1 so it was low. Who likes creamer with their coffee? The visibility was 6" and the wind was still blowing 5-10. Not good. Used the trolling motor to get to the protected shoreline about 50 yards away. Got to the shoreline and there was bait everywhere and there laying in 6" of water was our first flounder of the night. Still not sure Chris ever saw it. We were definately where the bait wanted to be last night. Thousands upon thousand of 3" finger mullet. Worked the shoreline 100 yards and ended up with 3. Went back and started over and did the same 100 yard stretch and as I was trying to convince Chris we needed to try another spot, he pointed and said not quite yet.

Flounder #4 in the boat. Notice the water in the lights. We were in 8" of water.

We decided to keep working this new stretch of shoreline and it was a good thing. The next 100 yards yielded 6 more flounder, a couple that I would have never seen if Chris hadn't pointed them out. When these fish lay around an oyster/sand mix bottom, they can really blend in. At 1am we made the call to try one more spot before we left in hopes of finally being able to see more than 6"-1 foot into the water. The last spot had better visibility(1-2') but no flounder were seen. Hit the ramp at 1:50am with 11 flounder and 1 mullet.

Big fish was 2:11. A few more were just over 2. The rest were 14-15" fish.

Louisiana gigger needs help with setup

Just getting into gigging guys and have a few lights around to make my first 12v underwater setup. This will be a handheld PVC rig powered with a 12v (8ah) sealed battery from academy. Need your opinions on which bulb to use.

One is a GE electric car headlamp(H4656SB). It is a 4 bulb superblue lowbeam headlamp that is really bright and spreads the light well as it is rectangle shaped. From what I can tell by looking up online, the bulb is 55watts.

The 2nd is a 100watt aircraft spotlight(4509 from Napa) that I use for frogging. Its REALLY bright but just concentrates the light in one direction, it doesnt really spread is out like the H4656SB does. I DID meet up with a guy flounder gigging with one the other night and it was really bright under water. Problem here is he was using a larger amp hour motorcycle battery; my 8ah battery may not keep 100watt bulb lit for too long.

So with that said, let me know what yall think. If there is a larger amp hour battery that anyone could recommend that is still light enough to carry in a backpack please let me know. Looking for the optimum/brightest setup here without having to carry a 50 lb battery in an innertube. Thanks in advance.

Went Fri night.Water conditons were not the best. Did pick up 5 and my buddy in his boat got 6. The new light set up worked good. The only problem was it obstructed my nav. lights,:doh which the Marine Po Po let me know about.( no ticket:clap but they did ck for everything else which is a first in 30 yr) Over all fair night with a good friend

No more peace and quiet out on the water. Traded in my batteries and underwater 12v lights for a generator and four 300Watt halogens.

Also going to try the trolling motor method instead of poling. Last week my shoulders were burning after I came off the water.

Going tonight and giving them a try.

I'm not asking for specific spots, but maybe a general area. Went tuesday night, started around the old Rod N Reel marina and worked back

towards the base. Then went to pickens, floundered up and down and found nothing. Finally ended up trying Shoreline all around the docks

and only ended up with three fish the whole night. I have grown up here and fished Perdido bay and everywhere in Pensacola bay, but i just

can't seem to ever get more than 4 or 5 a night.

any help is greatly appreciated.

need help with lights

I building a light rig for my yak, but cant seem to get power from batt to my halo. Sounds dumd I know,

This is what i building its an under water light system using a two inch Y cap pvc in wich i bought three 50 watt halos, that fits into each y cap which there is four of so 12 lights all together.

assembly in the cap is just an outdoor light socket with a positive and neg wire, after hooking wires up positve to posi - neg to neg i cant even get one light to turn on maby bad connection but have tried everything to get it to work , wirenuts tape everything

I know im no ellectriacian , but it seemed preety simple when when i got the idea stuck in my head. the wire im using for batt wire is just a lamp cord from depot rated for 600 watts plenty big enough i think

Im getting preety frustrated any advise or tips would be greatly appriciated

Sorry bro...you just had to try another spot! For those of you that don't know my buddy and coworker joined the forum under flounderking...We like to walk the shallows and stick em...well tonight we tried a new spot and it was slow going nothing but a few stud blue crabs...Well he decides to leave and my other co-worker (soon to join the forum) stays with me and we come upon two studs...one about 24" and another about 18" well it was time to head home about the time we were sticking them...only pics I got were on my phone...dunno how to load em..They gonna be good at the Restaurant tomorrow!

Took my best friend and his wife out with my wife and I and launched out to try to find a few. Spent most of the night looking at stingrays, the occasional sheepshead and quite a few large redfish that kept coming in and out of the lights. Finally decided to start to head in. As I look down, sure enough, my first ever gigged flounder! Not much to be proud of, 14". Kept going a few minutes more, now we're talking a 22"-er! Learned a lot from reading you guys' posts and kept hitting them just aft of the gills and having NO problems at all. Stuck 2 more over 20" and then let the wife try. She unfortunately hit one and he got off, but he did so because she stuck him WAY aft (probably the best fish of the night, too). Overall, not a bad night on the water with great friends! Pics to follow later on.

Well it wasn't a barn burner but the most was made of what he had to work with. Wind was 10-15 when I got down there.

While waiting for my crew, I hit a oyster bar and put a 16" trout in the boat.

My crew called and I went to the landing to pick them up and headed to the vicinity of our first spot. It wasn't dark enough to start giggin so we anchored at the mouth of a creek. Baitfish was getting slammed all around us. Tied on a chug bug and the first cast produced a good hit but no hookup. Fished for 10 more minutes with no hits, but the fish were still there. I tied on a gulp and chunked it out the back. About 10 feet out the back of the boat I get a hit. The fight resembles a sailcat for a while and I wasn't really into the fight until he popped up. 23"

It was now dark enough to turn the lights on and the wind had dropped to 5 knots. Tide was dropping and the water was dirty. We worked the first stretch for a couple hours and the first spot produced 2 flounder, 2 sheephead and a mullet. The second spot produced nada. The third spot produced 1 flounder.

Saw 8-9 flounder in all, some big redfish and lots and lots and lots of stingrays.

Between the stingrays and the days wind, the water was just too murky.

The big flounder for the night went 3 pounds 15 ounces.

flounder on homemade fly

ive started making my own flys and the other night I made a pretty one and wanted to see how it floated, I didnt want to get out my fly rod so I hooked it on my little wavespin and as soon as I put it in the water an 18 inch flounder came up and took off with it! I have never heard of a flounder coming 6 feet off the bottom to get a fly, has anyone else ever caught one on a fly?

Me and a freind went out tonight water clarity wasnt very good and we were just walkin. But still we managed to hit 1, about 17" Ill post a pic tommorrow. Im building a light rig for my kayak. Do yall think i can run four 100 wat halos from 2, 12 volt batts. I dont know? We went out of wolf bay. Yall have got me addicted to gigging, my dad runs a charter boat out of zeaks and ive done more offshore and inshore than most people but have become addicted to gigging flounder iff anyone ever needs an extra hand ill buy the gas and the beer and ill get us on a trip out of zeaks for a returned favor just want to learn a little more.

Midnight Rider and myself went out tonight. started at around 8:30 and fished till about 12:30 and ended up with 18. 2 ran on us but we were able to catch them and put them in the cooler. also had 2 that were just kinda hovering in one spot but not laying down that we were able to put in the cooler. will post pics tomorrow before i clean them.

A buddy of mine who doesn't come down here but once every 2 years or so and I are looking to go do some gigging and looking for some semi-decent spots to hit up. We don't take many (not looking to limit out, just maybe get about 10 or so total) and would gladly keep any tips a secret if you so asked. Just looking for a little help. I'll offer to trade up some of our catch as well in trade, or we can even meet up with you guys out there (we'll bring the cold ones!). We're looking to go sometime between now and Tuesday.

I'm just now going into my second year of giggin. I'm over in the Tallahassee area so you don't have to worry about seeing me on the water. It is nice to find a forum that is willing to talk about giggin. Most fisherman look down on us for giggin on the fishing sites, but everyone has their own hobby that takes them away from their work.

I have a 18x60 aluminum boat with a 31hp go devil motor. I run 4 underwater lights that are built into a pvc bracket I designed for my boat. The bracket goes into a fixed mount trolling motor bracket. I bought my lights from www.fishinglightsetc.com Basically they are like the starfire lights except with 100 watt bulbs. I enjoy the quietness of my setup and it takes about 20 seconds to get everything going once we get to the spot. With clear water, I have a 20 ft radius of visibility. In murky water its more like 10 feet.

I may go to the darkside of the generator next year. I usually carry 3 deep cycle batteries and they do weigh the boat down some but I can still work in 8 inches of water easily. We use the gigs to move the boat along the shoreline.

well went out again last night and ended up with 17 flounder and 11 sheepies, and about two buckets of blue crabs. in all it was a good night util the storm cam through. when it came up it was on us fast. lighting hitting the water not far from us and im in a metal boat not fun. rain so hard it was a white out for a while and then i lost my handheld gps in the weather. so runnin at night through grass flats and no gps while its stormin like a b!tch. not all that fun. then when i get back to town i stop at the store to get some ice for the catch and the clerk says (you know it is raining out there right) i just wanted to reach over and smack him abit. but all in all it was a good trip. o and also ended up with 26 rays as well. mike
