I have never caught a Blue (and I am looking forward to the invite) as it would be difficult to do out of an 18' flats boat. I feel that finding and fooling a fish is the thrill, and from the hookset on to landing the fish is somewhat anticlimitic. The moment that the fish is fooled and takes a fake as if it were something that the fish thinks is something that is going to be good to eat is the greatest part of fishing. The reason that Permit on fly is the most sporting fish to me, is to date I have yet to find anything harder to fool. Just getting close enough to get a shot seems to be almost impossible to me, much less fooling one. Doing all it takes to find a fish and then presenting a fake to it and making the fake act real enough to get an aproval by the fish taking it, is the most thrilling part to me. By no means is the fight not fun to me, but it is not nearly as thrilling as the bite, and seeing it makes all the better to me.

I realize that everyone is has a different opinion on things such as this, and I thank God, otherwise there could possibly be alot of people like me and that couldn't be a good thing. But:

Maybe this is a better way to ask the question, What part of fishing is the most thrilling?

What do you enjoy most about PFF?

I may be the strangest member of the forum. I have made many friends that I would not have had the chance to meet without being a member of the forum. Although I don't get the chance to see them or do things with them I still consider many of the people I have met on here friends.

I enjoy reading your thoughts. It never sieses to amaze me how much intelligence and knowledge is in the membership of this forum. There are many truly great people that are members of PFF, and it is a privalige to be able to communicate and get there opinion on anything. I have no doubt that if I were going to rebuild a 55 Ford, a Deep Water Well or the transom of a boat that I could get some great leadership and direction right here.

I love to fish and do quite a bit, mostly short trips here and there, and a couple of extended long trips (weeks) down into the keys a couple of times a year. I enjoy reading the reports and seeing the great pictures, but mostly I enjoy the challanging thoughts.

As I said, I may be the strangest member, but I enjoy the forum. We had a conversation about the fish that was most fun to catch. To me the fish that I enjoy trying to catch most is Permit via Flyrod. My neighbor claimed that Blue Marlin were far more sporting (although he has never tried to catch a shallow water Permit with a Flyrod). I have had more shots than I care to tell, and I have a total of 5 actually caught. Granted the type of fishing my neighbor does vs what I do is very different in nature, but it really made me think, what is the most sporting fish to try to catch??? Curious to anyone's thoughts????

navionics platinum

Hello,

does anyone have experience with navionics platinum and if so what is your opinion about it.

Their getting habitual

I know it's really easy to bash someone or something but sometimes the facts are facts and that's how it goes. So far this summer I've been checked by the FWC or Coast Guard several times while fishing. That's really no big deal, but the ability to do a proper and lawful inspection is lacking. Case #1, CG pulls up while I'm anchored/fishing in the bay; takes several minutes to manuever close enough to inspect( grab on, let go, throw rope, take rope back etc.) Then have to have discussions over regulations among themselves, argue and finally cut short and politely say good day. Case #2 FWC pulls up in shallows around mouth of Escambia. Has hard time controlling and maneuvering his boat, can't figure out fishing license date, says it's expired, I had to show him how it worked. He ask if I have all my required gear, no inspection and then procedes to ground himself. Case#3 Anchored in bay, same thing with license, he gave up trying to figure out the dates, said he was to write me a ticket for fire extinguisher being out of date. I had to inform him that a portable tank in a jon boat does not require a fire extinguisher to be on board. He conceded and left. I could tell you more but they're longer more dangerous cluster f--ks the CG and FWC worked together on. Has anyone else had occasions with their ineptness?

Escambia River at Bay

At low tide there is a spot that is knee deep at the mouth of the Escambia River (going into the bay) between the bouys. Me, my wife, and kids along with some long time friends took a vacation to Lake Martin, in Dadeville, Alabama. Pulled the boat from the salt and put it in the fresh. When I was younger I had a passion for water skiing, and went almost every other day during the summertime. I guarantee I have skiied just about every inch of the local bayous and rivers, and as a kid spent time on Smith Lake doing this as well. I hadn't skiied in about 6 years, so was looking very forward to going. We rented a house for four days, on what seemed to be the perfect spot on that lake. Once we got there and got unloaded, we wasted no time in getting wet. We did everything from tubing, skiing, wakeboarding, and kneeboarding, and trying to teach our kids the same with lots of laughs. This vacation brought back a lot of memories for me, and hoped to build some for my family. We were definetely probably the only center consoles on the lake but looked the best I assure you. This trip really took the meaning of a vacation to a level of what a family vacation is supposed to be. Didn't wear shoes or a shirt the whole time I was there, and never left the house until time to come home. Grilled out every meal, and ate like kings. I know a lot of people like Disney and Universal and such things as that, but I am going to tell you, that with kids, that aint no vacation, that's work. I guarantee my kids had ten times the fun these four days than they ever had a week at Disney, and you actually get to spend time with your kids, family, and friends. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we have rebooked the house for the last week in July for another vacation there, and might even do one more in September. Again, I hope this inspires some one around here to go, anywhere for that matter, but have a true vacation, and enjoy yourself!!!

Happy 4th to everyone.

Sherman Cove access

My neighbor is retired military and has launched his small boat at Sherman Cove occasionaly. They were hitting live hard tail (FYI). Pastor Skipper caught one that must have been over 60 lbs. and after 21.5 minutes of fighting her, he got her close enough that I could grab er by the tail and yank her into my little kayak. It was quite the adventure, let me tell you! So another guy that was out fishing with us butchered her up and then I took my portions home and started soaking it in water and white vinegar. At about 6, started the charcoal grill. By 8 it was hot and ready to go. Here's what I did to spice the sucker up:

2 lbs of fresh Amberjack

1/4 bottle of Kraft Catalina (Fat Free) salad dressing

salt

black pepper

garlic salt

rosemary leaves

Lathered up the steaks in the solution, and let it marinade for a couple hours while the cole got nice and toasty. The reason for letting the grill burn for that long was that the Royal Oak brand charcoal has a really strong flavor and I like a more mild charcoal flavor. So while I'm working my magic on the grill, my wife made some hushpuppies (hit the spot!)

When the fish was done, (when it's crispy on the edges and flaky in the center), I made some tartar sauce and we served it up. Also a nice touch was ice cold Coors Light and some sweet pickles. Remember, when the mountains change from white to blue, it's as cold as the Rockies!

If you try it, let me know what you think!

:bowdown

need numbers for brideg rubble

does anybody have the numbers for the bridge rubble? also need numbers for the live bittom west of the pass. trying to hook up some decent size black snapper...thanks

Looking for good company out of Destin in August

Hey everyone

Me and a buddy will be heading to Destin in August for our annual salt water fishing trip. Since we live in Atlanta and we only come down once a year, this is a very special trip for us. We were hoping to find someone with a boat that wants some good company for a day. We were hoping to head for blue water but we're open to just about any type of fishing. We'll pay for your gas, food, beer if you want, or any other supplies. We'll wash the boat down after the trip, clean the fish (I ran a 4 star kitchen for years so I can clean any fish you can catch!), cut bait, catch bait, or anything else you need us to do.

Neither of us make a whole lot of money so we can't afford those charters that run $100 - $200 an hour plus 20% gratuity. We're both normal guys that love fishing but can't afford it! No offense to any charter captains out there! We have some decent fishing gear to bring with us too if you want. We've both been fishing most of our lives so we can tie knots, bait hooks, and drive a boat - we don't know much about trolling though (we can learn quick!) I guess what I'm trying to say is that we're not amateurs but not experts either.

Well I thought it would be worth it to throw the question out there and see if anyone responded. We'll be in Destin the week of 8/16 through 8/23. Thought it might be a good opportunity to meet some folks from the forum too! Send me an email if you wanna chat or call me about possibilities. Thanks!!

:usaflag

Where can we find these rods??

Where can we find the bottom fishing rods like on the party / charter boats? I personally agree with this. I hope it will get more people on the same page. Maybe they'll even throw in a little fishing related ettiquette. If I could only have one person to fish with it would be him. My wife is the single most wonderful person in my life and she is my perfect life partner. Greg and I grew up together and have fished together most of our lives. I fish with several people and of course my family, but there is something about fishing with him that is different, in the fact it is an excape from everything that is the world. My wife and I fish together frequently, and she likes to go from time to time. But, the best fishing trips I have ever been on where shared by Greg.

We all have one, Who is your Fishing Buddy?

Grouper fishing??

I have been fishing in the gulf for about 4 years now and I was wanting to know where some of the best spots are to go, and what is the best bait to use <live or dead> for grouper. I got the hang of catching red, black snapper, but all the grouper I've caught have been a few inches short. We have tried around the edge with live bait but can only manage to catch kings. Any tips you can give me would be much appreciated.:bowdown:clap

Scientific Research Indicates Abundant Red Snapper Populations

http://www.floridasportsman.com/casts/080701/

Signed today--Bass Pro Shop--6/25/08

In a little over a week i will be 69 years old--I started work in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Picayune Miss. at the age of 12 in a Red and White Gro Store. What kind should I get? I am partial to a color screen. Opinions? I have a GPS in my car and I love it- it was a gift and I thought I would need one with a bigger screen but my inexpensive unit worked out great. Everyone chime in- there is one at Academy for 100 bucks right now and it's normally 150- thought I might get it but it has a black and white screen. Need some help from those in the know folks...'preciate it...Mike

Jewfishgoliaths in NW Florida.

Do you catch them around P'cola? I never did.

They are thick down here. I had one eat a Spanish Mackerel off my flyrod yesterday. I was in water about 12' deep. Three years ago, I had one eat a Cobia that weighed at least 30#. I caught the fish two days later and am using a pic of it as my avatar on this site. We catch bigger ones too.

I regularly catch 400-500 pounders in 20' and sometimes less. When I was chartering, I offered no jewfish, no pay. I'm sure I could hook a half dozen tomorrow if I could catch 5-10# Jack Crevalle for bait. Catching bait is the hard part.
