Well said Dan, Good to see you and Jeremy at Sherman last night.

All, It would be nice to have so many people at the 5/29 meeting that we have to have it in the yard instead of inside. Tony more than likely be there I'll call him.

Yes, he is in the process of being passed around from office to office. I don't know the law, however when I called the park rangers they told me that there is a regulation, and Tonys luck ran out. "we are enforcing this reg now".........

Like Dan stated, show up and lets try and do something about ALL the fishing issues, not just "Live bait" but everything!

There is usually 2 boats, why not have one catch bait and transport it out to the other that sells them a mile out?

Okay,heres my take on the whole thing. First off the language barrier was crossed last night when I first read it and glad Chris did the right thing and just did some rewording instead deleteing the whole tread cause this is important. Second its true that Tony needs a permit to cast his nets or sell bait within 1 mile of the state park but him selling his bait so close is to make it convenient for the people buying it(small boats,rough seas,etc.) This came up last night at the RFRA meeting and really pushed Capt. Wes Rozier over the edge. Don't like whats happening to our fishery,your fishing rights,the bait man situation,blah,blah,blah! Well getting on the forum and firing arrows at each other ain't gonna amount to a hill of beans when non-elected officials can pretty much do what they want and get away with it. There is a meeting down at the RFRA building on 5/29 about what we are gonna do to try and correct this problem,hence the beginning of the Gulf Coast United. Don't like whats going on then show up,put your money where your mouth is and make a differance in person instead of all this computer cowboy BS. If not then just shut the "F" up,sit back and watch it all go up in smoke! Thank You for your time. :usaflag

Well I aplogize for the language to all you men. I think its funny how I see people out at sailboat cove and fishing the pass drinking beer like its going out of style, driving there boats legally intoxicated. throwing the bird at me while im making a wake in the pass (with there kids on board). But then I say a few curse words on a forum, and all of a sudden im offensive.

and why get so offended by calling these law makers names. Its not like I directly talked about someone personally on the forum. O well...

The issue is that he needs a permit to collect and/or sell within Park boundries.

He could sell without permits by moving to inside the pass due north of the pass.

But if his favorite collection area is within the Park boundries he then needs a commercial permit to collect the bait.

As I read the original post last night I became embarrassed and ashamed of how the thread began and the direction it was heading. I understand that there are occasional rants and cuss words inserted now and again (even by myself) but this truly crossed the line of decency and was not appropriate for the subject matter. I was also glad to log on this morning to find Chris had acted rightfully and accordingly to the situation. We have a duty to those that log on to our madness to uphold a certain level of integrity.

I feel bad for the bait guy. He seemed like a nice guy who was working hard to provide a service. That being said it is fairly easy to catch your own bait. It may take 30 minutes to maybe an hour to fill your live well but it is actually a fun part of the trip. Just using sabiki rigs is what I do. Finding them takes a little scouting around. Sometimes though on slick mornings {very seldom lately} the schools are everywhere. Use a small dehooker so you don't handle the bait and they will last a long time. Usually the bait will be much larger than what the bait boat was selling. With 3 or 4 people bait fishing it doesn't take too long to load up.

That's what I figured, but I did not know for sure. Thanks for the info fellas. I can't throw an 8 footer very well, much less a 12 foot net. That man has to have some arms.

A mile off the beach is like what 25-35 feet of water. Trust me it ain't a whole lot of fun throwing a 12 ft. cast net in that deep of water. I know there are much better men than me out there but after about 4-5 tosses, I am ready to head to the house.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I would think that the concentration of baitfish is not as good a mile off the beach and his method of catching them would not be effective in that deeper water. He uses a castnet and chum on the bottom. He must have arms like the incredible hulk after throwing that net that many times!!!

I hope he moves to the east and keeps on throwing that net!

Can someone fill me in on one thing. And let me get one thing straight, I think it crap that he can not continue operating where and how he has in the past. But what is the problem with him being one mile off the beach? It's not that far. I hardly get offshore to fish, but do the cigs simply not run out there? Was he mostly concentrating around the pass bouys to get his bait? What is the main factor that keeps him from being a mile off the beach? Just a simple question that I am sure has a simple answer.

I for one am going to miss the bait boat. Catching our own bait is easy with sabiki rigs but much quicker with the bait boat. I hope that he can move to the east out of the park boundries and continue his service.

I watched the Sunday night @ 8 "Gulf Fishing" show with the reef guys as moderators and they said that the bait man was allowed to set up a mile of more offshore. It would be an inconvenience, but he could do it legally. Anyone want to comment on this?

First, I removed the language that was honestly inappropriate for this topic. Theire is a right way to voice your opinion and doing it in the fashion that was done here will not achieve anything. I know the language, attitude and moral exists all over this forum and sometimes it is needed to get the point across but to start out with it was in bad taste I felt.

Second, I have always questioned why the selling of live bait was allowed to happen when I faced so many problems trying to do the same thing years ago. Several years ago, I was an avid diver and also an avid reef keeper and thought I would turn my hobbies into something profitable. I was astonished by the laws that I faced as I could not sell livestock unless I sold livestock in order to get a SPL to sell live stock. It was a catch 22 in a sense. Maybe I was instructed wrong but there was no way I could collect and sell fish because I didn't have a SPL. The only way to get a SPL was to show that I have sold fish in the past.

Anyway, it sucks to see that the bait boat is gone because it was easy.

In the past threads on this, I believe there was a mention of the ability to apply for the permit that would allow him to sell bait in these waters. It sounded like a simple task to accomplish that many of the shrimpers have already done. I believe the laws were enacted to keep the park free of misuse and unwanted commercialism. They are not new laws and I agree with them even if this particular instance is inconvenient. There is a permitting process for allowing acceptable activities.

Twinbill, where did the net ban come into this? The Baitman has been throwing a cast net when I see them catching cigar minnows. The problem is a permit issue.

I also will miss the Baitman if he cannot get this straightened out or find a new spot to sell from. I can catch my own bait, but it saves me some extra time for fishing to use the Baitman.

Folks , you can't have your cake and eat too with this subject. The so called Recreational Fisherman wanted a net ban in place along with no more commercial fishing. But now since the bait man cannot sale :you his bait, you want to open back up the commercial fishing in the area. Hey I got an idea catch your on damn and you don't have to worry about acting like hypocrites. You cannot have this both ways. Hey I am all for commercial fishing, loved, lived (for a short time), and would love to do it again.

All he would have to do is move his traps and selling location east of the Pickens road gate and he would be out of the marine preserve and be legal, as far as I know.
