Any updates on the PFF shark tourney?

I wasnt able to make this even this time due to boat problems. First one I missed since it started. So I have been thinking about it since this morning and keep thinking about it but trying not to bother my friends too much by calling them.

If anyone has an update please post it.....

Pirates Tourney-45lbs in a Kayak

I was hoping to better my kayak results from my 3rd place redfish and a 1st place individual TWT from last year's Pirates on the Gulf Tournament. (Nice tournament with great prizes and it sounds like it is going to be even better next year!) Haven't done much inshore fishing, but I thought I would try the 3-mile in my yak for the 1st time since 5 nice kings were caught off the Palafox pier on Thursday morning. I tried the bayous on the Gulf Breeze side first to try to catch some menhadens. No luck there, but I did catch a 5.4lb 26-inch redfish on bull minnow. I finally made it out to the middle of 3-mile perhaps a little late (8:15am), but it sounds like not many kings were caught at 3-mile or Palafox pier. I had terrible luck catching bait, but the one LY I did catch produced a 5.0lb Spanish Mackerel! This was my 2nd biggest Spanish ever. I also caught a 5lb catfish, a couple of smaller catfish and a small shark.

That was it for the morning. I tried the evening in the sound. Caught two 5lb 24-inch redfish and a 12-inch speck. All were thrown back.

The next morning I tried Navarre Beach and caught a 5.0lb King Mack and three 5lb Remoras. I did see about an 80lb sailfish about 200 yards away 1/4 of mile from the beach jump 3 times in a row which was an awesome sight! My Spanish took 1st place, so I was excited. I got 1st and 2nd respectively in the Optimist and Sertoma tournaments this year with a skipjack in my kayak, but a trashcan slam fish is not the same as a Big Mack!

Total of nine 5-pounders (45lbs) within 5 different species and nice weather.

Pirates tournament report

Great weekend to be on the water. We ran all over the gulf looking for grouper. Turns out I suck at grouper fishing. Being calm we ran way out SSW and fished almost every rock I know of from 50-65 miles from the pass and the only grouper we got was a 4.5lb scamp. Lots of porgies chewing up our baits but not too many big bites. Deep water stuff too. Fished a few places from 360-400ft and couldn't find any grouper. We did catch a few nice snapper including one that was about 15lbs (released) and some jacks. Got tired of catching porgies and federal snapper so we flipped out a few king baits and got 2. One was about 9lbs and then we got the 17.6 pounder that we weighed.

Made the long run in to state waters and got our 8 legals in about 50 minutes (biggest was only 3.5lbs). It was pretty dark by this time so we stumbled slowly through the pass and made our way home. Took me a minute to find Navy Point in the dark as the signs aren't lit at all anymore and the outer red is missing the reflective sign that faces the bay, but we eventually got in. All in all a good day. Fishing was so-so but the weather was good and we didn't break anything on the boat, and we even won a division.

I would like to thank everyone involved in making this a great success. We ended up with over 10,000 spectators through the gate in the two days. This will definitely make this one of the largest spectator events in Pensacola. I would like to thank the RFRA for there unbelievable help in making this a great event for Pensacola. I hope they will consider having there tournament along with the shark tournament next year. Special thanks to Marty White of WXBM and Bob Sharp for doing an outstanding job as MC's and keeping the crowd entertained. I hope everyone enjoyed the tournament as much as I did. JULY 19th EMERALD COAST REDFISH CLUB TOURNAMENT

We had the pleasure of having a couple of non club members boats fish this tournament. One of which captured top prize of a stick-it anchor pin donated by SOS Marine, a spinning rod, and an assortment of lures donated by HighRoller. They also won the calcutta taking home $250. It was a great day on the water and the difference in weight between 1st and 2nd was only 1oz. To see pics and the full story go to www.theredfishclub.com

The bite was slow for us. We released a white and placed third in the Wahoo Division. Fully Involved was first in the Tuna Division. A few Blues were tagged none killed. I heard a Destin boat NOT in the tournament tagged and released a 800# blue right next to a tournament boat:banghead:banghead That was a $1,000,000.00 Fish

Went all the way to Mars, fished a beautiful color change all day. A good amount of bait was on it but we only caught the white. I'll post his pic. later. Left the camera on the boat.

Quick ADSFR report

Fished the ADSFR over the weekend. We spent friday speck fishing. Started in the intercostal behind Pensacola beach and got 6 specks in the morning but they were all less than 15". Went over to Sunset Grill for lunch and spent the afternoon fishing around Johnson's beach and got blanked.

Saturday we went offshore early. Cleared the pass at 0500. Being slick calm with a full moon there was good moonlight to run by. Fishing was slow for us. We fished from Pensacola over to Dauphin island and could only manage a 23lb king to get in the boat drawing. Didn't catch anything to weigh that could beat what was already on the board. We did catch a 20.5lb snapper on a chicken rig though. Probably the second or third biggest snapper I have caught. Fried him up Sunday and called it a weekend.

Bay Point Invitational finished it's 25th tournament with 47 boats participating in the all billfish release format.

Life is Good released 3 blues and a white around Thunderhorse on the first day of fishing to take home 211k

Wynsong released a blue and a sail to win second place release, they also won yft w/110# for 208k

Seaspray won second and third tuna to take home 84k

Miss Mindy won Dolphin with a 51.5# to capture 87k

Traders hill won wahoo with with a 72# fish to collect 85k

Overall 23 billfish were released.

This was the most upseting event that has occured to me at any tournament I fished. I have never had someone steal from me at a tournament. When we were at the awards banquet at Flounders on Sunday someone actually got in the boat and stole our costa sunglasses, money, and a shaving bag. After our winnings it still cost up $1000 bucks to fish last weekend. If anyone has heard of someone bragging about it please let me know so I can settle up with them. We were having a great time till that happend. Chris great Tournament but there needs to someone on the docks. Has anyone else had anything stolen from them?

IFA Redfish Tour Event at Navarre Beach

Thanks and congratulations to the teams who came out and made us feel welcome at Jauna's and Navarre Beach State Park this past weekend. Dwayne and Fred went back to LA with their 3rd win in 3 events.

It was great to put a face on some of the names of teams who are new to the IFA, and we were glad to see the families at the Captain's meeting as well as the weigh-in. It was evident that all were having a good time and making new friends around this first event for us in this area. Though we had only 54 anglers for this event, I'd guess that it was a positive experience for all.

It was unfortunate that our event, which was scheduled far in the advance of us being made aware of the BudLight schedule, was set on the same weekend. We will not face that situation again in Pensacola!

For those who'd like to keep Redfish events coming back to the region, I'd like to suggest that all who are interested step up and show your interest by fishing the IFA event in Orange Beach on September 19th.

Also, we'd like to see a "show of hands" of all who would have fished the IFA Navarre Beach event if it hadn't been scheduled opposite the BudLight. We'd sure like to hear from the anglers who fished this year, and will fish next season if we come back again.

61-pound Shark Caught on a Kayak with Pics

Kayak log: Last Friday the 13^th. Maybe I was a little superstitious, or maybe I thought there would not be any other kayakers out there on a workday, but I sent out a post to have another “yacker” meet me out there. I got up and checked the weather radar and there were only a few very isolated showers. I arrived at 4:30am, but the minute I shut off the ignition to my truck, it began raining. :reallycrying Since it was dark, wet and I got a no-show from my post, I just waited out the rain. :sleeping

I was participating in my first Bill Hargreaves Fishing Rodeo with 2 main goals in mind: Win the Largest Fish in a Kayak award and the King Mackerel division. A big king should take care of both-right?

After waiting for the rain to stop and loading up the yak, I pulled out about 5:45am. Within 10 minutes, I had caught 2 small ladyfish. In this tournament, there was literally no prize for 2^nd place so I just threw them back. Next, I caught a hardtail, so now I had a good king mack bait. I paddled around to the end of the pier at 6am. I cast out and the second that the hardtail plunged into the water, I had a hit, but, it was short-lived. I reeled it in only to see what looked like a king bite with only the head remaining. :doh After drifting away from the pier, I noticed a waterspout in the distance. :hoppingmad

I couldn’t tell which way that isolated storm was going, so I pulled back close to the pier ready to head in if was coming towards me. (At this point, my superstitious side is concerned.)

But, the storm was heading East and at 8am, I caught a small king on a live cigar minnow. At 8:30am, I was out about a half-mile offshore and my drag starts screaming with the rod that had a live hardtail on it. I grabbed the rod and it felt like my 40-pound kayak king mackerel from last fall. This was just what I was hoping for!!! :clap After 20-minutes, I see that it is a *%#!* shark. Rather than cutting the line, I decide to just go ahead and try to catch him for a tournament entry.

:bpts The answer to your question is “Yes, he did drag me around a lot.” (I always get that question, but this is the first fish that I have noticed who drug me around out there in the gulf since I let kings take the drag out and wear themselves down.) After about an hour of fighting, he was getting close to my kayak and he took a couple of sweeps right under me. (My superstitious mind kept hearing the Jaws theme...duh, duh, duh, duh...)

...Back to reality. I decided the smart thing to do (especially on Friday the 13^th) would be just to pull him onto the beach rather than in my kayak. So, I gave him some distance from me by letting out some line and proceeded to paddle in. Well, he wasn’t quite ready to go in and started taking me back out to sea, so I muscled him around for another 10 minutes. I finally got up to the beach and then reeled him in within a few minutes onto shore while sitting in my kayak to make sure it was still a catch from my kayak. :hotsun I weighed it in that evening and it was a black tip shark weighing 60.9 pounds! :takephoto (Note to ~~tree~~ shark huggers: Blacktips are good eating and I gave it to someone who knows my sponsor.)

On day two, I wanted to spend more than 2 ½ hours trying to catch a king, but I got up about the same time only to see thunderstorms on the weather radar, so I went back to bed. :sleeping I pulled out into the Gulf at 6:30am and caught a 12.5lb king and a throwback 5lb king. About 8:20am, I had a king between 19-20lbs to my kayak bow. I knew that the biggest king was between 17 & 18lbs on the leaderboard, so I wanted to be careful with this one. Well, after about the 12^th time of it passing by my bow, it got caught on my sabiki line that had fallen in the water. Luckily, he shook loose, but I knew that was a good way to lose a fish. As I was reaching for my clippers to just cut the sabiki line, he got tangled up again and the hook popped out of his mouth! :banghead:banghead:banghead

I hooked a blacktip shark about 3-feet long soon after that, but just cut the line this time. When I caught a big remora about 10:30am, I knew at that point it was getting late in the day and time to head back in. :hotsun The lost king would have won the division as it turned out, but at least I reached one of my goals this weekend. (My wife had to point out that I got beat by a girl for the king category…I told that her girls can catch fish, too but I don’t think that convinced her to start fishing.) I had a great fight, enjoyed a great tournament and the shark was my third biggest fish ever behind another shark and a sailfish that I had caught in the FL Keys…but those were not on a kayak!!! :)
