Blue water is all the way up on the beach. We're getting reports of 50'+ visibility and 68 degrees at the old Pensacola Pier Rubble, and 100+ vis and temps in the low 70's on the nearshore wrecks.

Second chance 5mm suits

Would a 3mm suit be good enough for a year round suit in most opinions? I'm thinking of purchasing a 3 mm suit here in GTMO for the winter dives. I've always gotten by with a skin year round. Winter night water temps usually around 79. Suggestions?

Which suit would be a good year round suit there? Hear in GTMO I usually get by with a skin year round, although some of the Jan-Mar night dives are borderline chilly. When I dove the "O" in June I remember being extremely thankful to have what I think was a 3MM suit. Suggestions?

Don't buy from DIVE PROS!!

Years ago after getting certified, I bought most of my gear at the dive pro on creighton blvd. I liked scubapro bc's and regs. I got a scubapro frameless mask when they first came out and loved it. A few years ago it flooded because the seal failed where the lens is molded to the mask.. I took it to Dive pros and they exchanged it on the spot and replaced it with one off the shelf. It failed once again this summer and I have been using my wife's mask. I took it in to dive pros and they sent it to the factory for replacement. I was just called by dive pros and they said it was OUT of warranty, but the factory would send me a new one for forty dollars. It sales for over a hundred in the shop and leisurepro.com sales it for $59 DOLLARS..... I do believe in supporting our local shops and I do most of my business @ MBT!!!!! But, if you have to have a scubapro item, you might as well buy it online and save HALF if the company and shop is not going to warranty an obvious defect!!!

Now i'm done with my rant and buying a new mask!!!!!

Hello fellow divers up in PCOLA! I'm a Navy Corpsman stationed in GTMO Cuba ( past 3 yrs) that's coming back to Pensacola in July 09. By the time I get back there I should have finished about 500+ dives here, all including: boat, beach, low viz, wreck, strong current, and bullshark petting dives. Been advanced certified for 30 yrs. I had the pleasure to dive the "O" this past June. I'm looking forward to all the local dives and elsewhere. Looking forward to possibly meeting some of you and getting some dives in.

one hell of a deep dive

well after almost a year of having the dive plan hanging in my office if finally got the opportunity to do it.

I HIT THE SAND AT THE ORISKANY ON AIR!!!!!

i rolled of the boat with double LP 95's topped to 3200 of regular ol' 21% air and a 40cuft of 100% O2. my plan was

150' for 5,

220 for 5,

150 for 10,

120 for 10,

100 for 10

then deco out at 70 for 3, 60 for 3, 50 for 4, 40 for 6, 30 for 8, 20' on O2 for 12

i got down to 150, grew some balls and down i went, getting more and more hammered every foot past 190 i got. at about 210' it took both hands to turn my flash light on, but i had no problem checking my air/bottom time/elapsed time. i did however have issues figuring out my bouancy once down at 224' due to the rediculous amount of gas that it takes at that depth to make you neutral. after 3 minutes at 224' i had seen a large shark, some giant snapper and grouper and some pretty colors it was time to go. had to use the side of the ship to get myself past the 200 mark where i finally got possitive bouancy and started making my way back up.

the "O" is definately a different wreck now with the deck at 150'. what an experience...i have over 1000 logged dives and the one where i didn't even carry my gun is now my most memorable.

Wreck Class 23-25 November 08

I will be teaching a PADI Wreck Specialty class. For someone just looking to collect cards, this isn't the class for you. This class will teach you the basics of diving a wreck, basic mapping, and limited penetration. We will do extensive reel work and cover specific techniques for deep water and wreck diving self-rescue. We will tackle a classroom session on the night of the 23rd, and do an inshore trip on the 24th. On the 25th, we will dive the USS Oriskany. You will need two lights for the class. Looking for a rebreather course

Does anyone know where I can attend a rebreather course in the area? I've never seen one advertised, is this something I will probably have to travel to get certified in.

You guys have any expeerience with rebreathers? Thoughts? I understand that the fish are much less reluctant to come around you with the absence of bubbles.

I do realize that it is illegal to spear with one. (At least I think it is, someone told me that).

Each time I dive, when I get back up I hock up bloody mucus.. It's obvious it's caused by the dive/pressure and after spitting out a few it clears up until the next dive. I assume it's has something to do with sinuses and pressure, blood vessels expanding and whatnot. Just wondering if anyone had any info.

Logging Dives

I know there are a lot of Dive Masters, Instructors and whatnot here so I figure this would be the best place for info..

I was certified about 4 years ago then never dove. I work out of town a lot and scheduled charters for when I could get back but they were always cancelled.. Finally, I bought a boat and have dove about 50 times this summer.. I planned to log them in the beginning but couldn't find my log book.. I finally found it and figured I'd backtrack a little and get up to date.. But, I noticed a seal imprinted on my first 5 dives done during the course... So, do the following dives have to be stamped or does my dive buddy just have to sign? I don't want to look shady for filling out all that crap late but I also don't want to not get credit for an entire summer of diving almost every weekend either. I've been diving with a couple guys that dive Nitrox and I'm really seeing the advantage of that class. We dove about 120 feet yesterday. Me and another guy ran out of air and came up but the guy diving Nitrox stayed down another TEN MINUTES!! That gave him just enough time to wait for a school of monster AJ to swim by and he busted one of them, beating my AJ that was on the board for first.. :banghead

Anyway, some of those classes you can't take without a certain number of logged dives.. I have more than enough for whatever but need to log... What to do?

I know this is a rookie question but I've forgotten a lot of that stuff. Reading tables, and the other safety stuff is about all I retained from that class. For the life of me, I can't remember the protocol for logging dives..

Bimini Trip Report Part 1

Bimini Trip Report: Part 1

Disclaimer: I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is on certain offenses in the Bahamas so when necessary names, dates, and offenses have been changed or omitted to protect the innocent/guilty!

The trip began with the drive down to Ft. Lauderdale on Tuesday. The caravan started with a meet up at 5:30am in Pensacola, and Sean, Doc, Briana, and myself all loaded up into a rented minivan. Next time I have to drive any long distance I'm renting a minivan: four captain's chairs, room for gear, and a slap shift on the column. Needless to say, we had fun with the minivan!

The trip started at 5:30am, but I knew we were on vacation when the center console of the minivan, and the glove box got turned into a cooler. Yes...it will hold ice.

We arrived in Ft. Lauderdale at around 5:00pm and got checked into the hotel, and promptly made our way to the tiki bar. We had to be up really early the next morning to fly out to Bimini, so most of us went to bed after the long drive...some of us didn't...but that's another story for another time. We all got up the next morning and loaded up to head over to Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport...that is after someone in our group had to slip Pepe the cleaning guy $10.00 to return ID/Credit Cards left at establishments the previous night. With all ID/Credit Cards in our possession we all headed on over to catch our flight on Bimini Island Air.

So we all loaded up on about a 30 seat plane, and headed for Bimini.

The flight was only about 20 mintues long. We landed in Bimini at around noon.

Bimini has two islands, the North Island and the South Island. We flew into the South Island where we went through customs, and then caught a taxi van that took us to a water taxi. We rode the water taxi about 50yrds to the North Island.

Once we arrived on the North Island we got checked into our rooms at the Bimini Blue Water Resort.

Once we got checked into the room we all went and found some lunch. Capt. Bob's and CJ's were the diners of choice on the island.

after a greasy hamburger we all loaded up for the first dive of the trip. We dove with the Keefe's operation, and as is typical on most charters of this type, we had to do a shallow check out dive of sorts first. Well, with this group, we definitely made the most of it. I don't have any underwater photo's yet (I'll get them later this week,) but I do have a lot of top side photos of the dives. I'll lump all the pictures together in no particular order.

We dove Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. By the end of the week some of us were really tired after diving.

We did make the most of the top side activities as well. We all headed out one night to see the sights on Bimini. We stopped first to check out the "government" building, aka the jail, and the medical facitilities.

Once we determined that the jail could only hold 6 of us we knew we were in for a fun night! We headed out to the Beach Bar for a fun night out. In order to get to the Bimini Beach bar we had to catch the water taxi again, and then load up on the Partridge Family bus for a ride down to the Beach Bar.

BIMINI TRIP

Well guys we landed yesterday (Fritz you did great) in Ft Lauderdale and I am still down here. We had an absolutely awesome time. The weather was perfect the Vis was unbelievable (80-100ft) and the dives were spectacular. I am down here boat shopping for the next few days but when I get home I will upload some pics. Well I am off to the IGFA hall of fame and then to a trial run on a boat. Thanks MBT for a great vacation:bowdown Can't wait to hear from the rest of the crew!

cause of a bad headache??

Went diving friday and saturday, had a headache come on while a few minutes into the dive, did my thing, came up and my head was pounding. While on my SIT ended up arfing a couple times. Anyway, this happened friday and sat.

We are here in Destin for the week. We might get to go with the local dive shop tomorrow. Still iffy. Is anyone going tomorrow?? If you need any divers next week let us know we would like to go and will gladly pay our share... We have 2 dives left to complete to be AOW certified (Deep and Wreck). We have done wreck dives 8 or more times just need to get the deep dive in. We also completed EAN/Nitrox certification already. We just , rephrase this I wan to shoot some fish with my new to me spear gun!!!

UWF scuba club!!

Hey yall!

I'm in the UWF SCUBA club, and we are planning a trip down to the Key's for Spring Break. The sweet thing about the deal is; all we (the students) have to pay for is, our dives and food/extras. They club is planning on picking up the tab on GAS and lodging:hoppingmad!!!!

The only problem with the deal is:banghead...WE NEED TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CLUB so we don't empty our club account on one trip!!

Anyone have any good thoughts on fundraisers for a college club?? Any suggestions would be GREAT!!!

Tooth Ache/Pressure ?

I've never had a toothache in my life. I've logged several dives over the past two weekends ranging in depth from 20-145 feet and all of the sudden I have some intense sinus pressure, my ears pop every time I swallow and I have a toothache across all of my back teeth, top and bottom. I've put Ora-gel on them but it does nothing.. It feels like pressure from behind pushing on them..

Maybe I'm just paranoid but it's just strange that I would have pain in ALL those teeth after diving. What do you guys think? Has this ever happened to any of you? It seems like I remember something from the certification class about fillings and pressure from diving but it's been a few years and I'm not sure. I have fillings that were done by military dentists and we all know how good the medical care is for military personnel. I'd rather have a veterinarian work on me that those teenage navy doctors that like to carve on Marines.. lol.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I don't go to the doctor unless the bone is sticking out but this is a little strange and I'd like to hear from some of you veteran divers..

Yeah we were at the "O" but it was the best I have seen since March. 80'+. The best news for everyone was that it looked good all of the way out, no brown water anywhere. Some folks who dove with a class at Pensacola Beach said it was 20+. It is going to be a beautiful weekend! If you have a chance, go out and get a dive in. We have been waiting on this all summer! :clap

Shark Shield

Shark Shield performs as advertised. Two weeks ago, I had three dives with my new Shark Shield but did not see any sharks. Plenty of blood in the water but no sharks. Today, on my second dive, I had a stringer of fish on me when I noticed a 5-6 ft shark ( not a bull or black tip) circling me at about 30 ft. So far so good. Then all of a sudden, the shark came directly at me and got to about 15-20 ft before it suddenly made a 180 turn and sped off. This happened about three or four times with the same results. Now feeling extremely confident, I ignored the shark for the rest of the dive. However, I did notice that it followed me up during my ascent (to about a depth of 40 feet) but never got any closer than 20 ft from me. Also, it did not charge at me directly anymore. It just circled. The visibility was about 35 ft at the time.

Ft. Pickens Dive Report

We headed over to Ft. Pickens with some rescue students today, and after drowning a few of them we dove Ft. Pickens. It was low tide, so the viz wasn't great (8-10ft,) but the fish were everywhere! There was a school of 20-30 slot reds all over the jetties. Juve grouper, red snapper, and mangrove snapper covered everything. All in all it was a great day, and 3 divers got introduced to Ft. Pickens!

PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- Authorities in the Florida Panhandle said a Texas man is dead after a cave dive. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said two Houston men were diving about 2,000 feet below the surface Friday in an area known as "Rabbit's Hole." One of the men reportedly began acting erratic, though it's unclear what happened. Richard Mork was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed.

Same day as the other video of me gettin drug around by a shark, I was able to swim with some VERY friendly dolphins on another dive! Much more relaxing!:)

Rich (Spearfisher) and his girlfriend Briana were on the dive too, which happened to be her first boat dive out in the gulf...man did she luck out and get spoiled!

They stayed with us for a good 10 minutes, and came back later on too, there were 3 of em, and I had to hold onto my mask and reg cuz they were so close I was worried they were gonna knock em off my face with there tails!

No fish killed in this video, and no violence of any kind. All hugs and kisses and flowers and peaches. Hope you enjoy.
