| On Monday June 2, my son and I had a good trip w/ Capt. John Rivers. We got an early start just after sunrise on the speckled trout in Santa Rosa Sound using live shrimp both free line and under a popping float drifting the grass flats in about 5' of water. We had several hits on a topwater plug, but as the old saying goes, "live bait works best". The larger pinfish were notorious bait stealers so we went through our supply of live shrimp rather quickly. When we were nearly out of shrimp, Capt. John cast netted some smaller pinfish and the specs seemed to like those nearly as well. Here's my son with one of the better specs last Monday.
Here's our what we were able to bring home for the day.
Our total catch for the day was well over 20 specs, most of which were under the size limit, but we managed to bring home 7 nice ones for the grill. Other stats: >20 total speckled seatrout (7 keepers), 3 ladyfish, and 1 bluefish. God Bless!!!

Death From Above (6/8/2008) Nice catch!! What do specs taste like on the grill?Good! I rather broil or grill specks over frying. The key is not to cook them too long, or it will turn mushy.

Nice job xlr, and your son too! Capt John is a great guy! Glad you all had a good time, and a dinner on the grill to finish it out!

Was wondering about them getting mushy on a grill. To me the best eating specs are the 12"-14" variety that have to be put back. Less worms than the bigger ones and the meat is firm and fries up nice and crisp.
