I was preping my 23' mako today for paint ( sanding down to fiberglass) started noticing cracks around the outboard cutout. to make a long disappointing story short the whole transom was soaking wet and rotten. Got everything cut out . My question is coosa or marine plywood? sorry in advance if there is a similar post.

Hey Fred!  How's the boat doing?  We had fun meeting you at the ECMako raft-up last month.

Bamafan - I sent you a PM about ClassicMako as well.  It is a great resource and one of the biggest contributors leaves in P'cola....I'm sure he will be along soon.....  He has a nose for finding boat repair questions!

hey steve, boat is doing so-so. i went out last sunday like a dip@#@ with the 25knot winds and 4ft in the bay. showed up some shortcomings on my ride i need to shore up. nothing really involved, just will be time consuming. good thing its cooling down. will have to make some time.

and yes, had a great time at the raft up. wife eventually came around and liked it too. will definitely have to do that again. in the meantime, will try gigging on my...errr......my sons new ride. 15 alumacraft with 30 mercury 4stroke. very fast but very wet since it's a tiller.

I got the transom done, Thinking about laying a layer of 7.5 glass over the whole bottom. Thanks to all you  guys over on classic mako . lots of knowledge over there. My move to Pensacola has now been moved to may ,so I should be ready.

Why? That is pretty light weight glass. ALL the gelcoat will need to be removed.

Here's some pix's not yet posted on Ringleaders 261 B Mako. http://www.classicmako.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9592

I would use a little heavier glass. 7.5oz is pretty light weight stuff.

Mine looks about the same , alot more cracking towards the stern though. Are you guys just filling the cracks or laying glass over it?

Glass is being laid and then faired out. It's being done in a shop near Batten Rouge, La. Ringleader lives in Slidell, La.

Adding 7.5 oz cloth over fractures is a little better than chocolate coating a turd. The fractures will still be there and will comes through the new stuff. If you're not willing to grind deep into the whole laminate and then rebuild with something like Knytex fabric and then use vinylester or epoxy resin you are probably wasting your time. Those fractures tell me that the area inside was never braced well enough to begin with. Have you taken care of that too? Lots of pounding up there!
