has anybody ran a portable generator ( WHAT SIZE) as a substitute for shore power. wanting to run just my A/C offshore. I was at the marina the other day and a guy  ( Honda dealer ) told me he has a Honda 1000, that powers his A/C on his sailboat. He told me it should power up the A/C, but probably nothing else. thanks for your time

Yep, the Honda is by far the best.  Quiet and reliable.  The 1000 will be too small to reliably run A/C, you will need the 2000.  You can order one for about 850 all in delivered.  I forget the name of the place but can find it if you need.  Really awesome generator.
