not the best conditions to be out in but it was worth the trip. left pc pass about 8:00 headed south with a hope of tuna & wahoo. after a little over 2 hour boat ride witch usually takes an hour we finally started fishing. 1st hook up didn't take long with a school of tuna busting on top we had good expectations unfortunately when the fish got to the boat it was 1/2 a bonita i guess a shark wanted him more. next hook up went a little better saw a bill chasing a bait off the outrigger fed it back to him and he was on took about 45 min. to get him to the boat. not much happened after that but a long miserable ride home through some of the nastiest weather i've been through got back to the hill around 7:30.

as long as the fish is of legal size it can be pulled from the water and released.

no, after that reply wasn't sure of my knowledge on sailfish regs, called fwc and spoke with an officer at local office just passed on what they told me.

Congrats on the sail.  Good looking fish.  Just to settle the "remove from water" debate, here is the reg copy and pasted from the NMFS site.

BILLFISH CATCH AND RELEASE

FISHERY MANAGEMENT

PROGRAM

NMFS encourages catch and release of Atlantic

billfish, and the use of circle hooks to

maximize post-release survival. A fish that is

not retained must be released by in a manner

that will maximize its survival by cutting the

line or using a dehooking device, and without

removing the from the water.

I gotta say, that's pretty stupid. So, if I want to take a picture with my first billfish and have it out of the water, then I need to kill it so I am obeying the law...that doesn't make sense to me.
