Wasn't planning on becoming a member of the forum but have been reading it almost every day for the last few weeks to get ready for my trip to florida. Spent the first day out on the beach catching all small cats (probably 5 to 8 inchers). Went out this morning at about 7 and caught more small catfish for about an hour on frozen shrimp, then between 8 and 10, caught 4 ladyfish and lost two (they're good escape artists). Yes- I am just a tourist from nashville used to bass fishing in lakes, but I am having tons of fun on the surf. Hopefully I'll get some more on here later. And are ladyfish any good to eat? if so how are they best prepared.

Don't eat the ladyfish, but they are good to cut up and use for bait. They're a heck of a lot of fun to catch too!

I don't even think asians eat them....
Sharks definitely do though!

Some of the commercials used to catch them for 'bait' but would send them to the West Coast to be processed into fish balls for the Asian trade. I don't know if they do that now.
I suppose that you could soften the bones by steaming and do something with them. I don't fool with them. I don't shark fish either so I just 'turn 'em go', as my old Cajun Uncle used to say. Lots of fun to catch!. C2

| Hey, here is another Nashville area native that had some fun down in Destin 4th of July week. Get a Penn 850SSM spinning reel and a 10 ft two piece surf rod, spool it with 50lb. PowerPro braid, get a 3ft. wire leader with a 7/0 circle hook, cut that ladyfish in half, run the hook through the head a couple of times, wade out as far as you feel comfortable and cast. Here are some pics from my trip. Get out about 5:00 am, catch some lady fish, and go after the big stuff!

Thanks for the advice everyone. And thats a nice shark. What did you catch the redfish on? I used to catch them in Hilton Head on plastic worms but that was in the lagoons.

I ran out of lady fish and they didn't come close to the surf for a couple of days, so I went to Half Hitch Tackle in Destin and bought some frozen porgies. I used the same leader and hook for shark, put on a whole porgie, threw it out and waited. I was hoping for sharks but I ended catching those two red fish. I would highly recommend getting some bigger gear and going after bigger game from the surf next time you are down. You'll also have alot of fun catching bait on light tackle.
