Guys I need a bigger boat and I have to keep it in the garage. I figure anything will be better than my 14 footer. I LOVE my boat, but it gets a little crowded at times as I expand my repertoire to include Pensacola Pass fishing. I have looked at the Boston Whaler 17 Montauk- it's 30K and I don't like yankee boat names. I know I will probably have to have the trailer rigged with a folding tongue to fit the garage but that's OK. I am looking hard at the Cape Horn 17 at this point, as well as Bay Stealth and Blazer Bay 18's, if they will fit. I hope some of you wise old salts can help me find a dry, smooth riding boat. I know it won't be perfect, but it will do better than my flat bottom 14 for what I want to do, and I can keep it at home until I get in a position to have something larger stored off site. I was pretty high on the Carolina Skiffs but a friend told me they ride wet and rough. I need the voice of experience here folks. Let me know...

The garage is your limiting factor. That's why I don't live in a subdivision with all the HOA rules.

Measure the garage and measure the garage door height clearance when the door is open.

A removable trailer toung will let you get a little larger boat in there.

I think you will find that your pretty much limited to a flats style boat.

The consoles and console grab rails on others will be to high to clear the open garage door.

I heard that!!!   HOA would crap a few bricks if they had to deal w/ my yard....My best suggestion would be a 16-17 ft skiff w/ a folding tounge....

I had a similar issue in that my garage is the limiting factor. This is my experience:A removable tongue is more of a pain than a folding one, its heavier etc, but on the rigs i tried they gave a shorter overall length. That is from end of motor/prop to where the garage door goes down.

I was able to squeeze extra 18 inches LOA in by parking at a slight angle and wife and i park outside the garage. That may not work for you but remember that is a decision that sticks once you make it. There is extra depreciation on your car etc. Plus your hood may not be as safe as mine.

If, like i had, you have a workshop at the end of the garage and it has double doors, you can back your motor into it. The downside is: the motor had better be well drained as in the 'up' position that water with or without salt in it is not doing you  any good.

The hassles are still worth it though.

You could always go with a Carolina Skiff they are reasonably priced and they make 100 different models.

Nevermind just read the last sentence of your post  The 17 Cape is a great little boat good for fishing the bay but can run offshore weather permitting.

If it was me I would tear out the back of my garage and back it into on through.

Can you fit a Cape in the garage with the height?

Maybe consider getting the boat you really want and not settling and storing it at a marina or storage area.

Exactly what I was thinking. Knock the back outta that thing.

I would lean towards a bigger skiff. Seems like you're gonna have to decide if you want a LOT better ride or a little better. Most anything will get you a little better but the skiff is not likely to be a bunch better.

More info would help! Like budget? What types of fishing do you do (and what type MOST?). Is getting VERY shallow real important? Normal (expected) load/crew? NEW only or maybe slightly used (refer to budget). Lots of good choices out there, but the above questions/answers would help narrow them down!

P.S. I'm not a big Boston Whaler fan (quality has fallen), but ruling out a boat because of the name?

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for the replies. Let me answer some of the questions posed by people...

Thanks to the guy who reminded me to consider the vertical clearance- I had not previously considered it.

Any of you guys who run 16 or 17 ft Carolina Skiffs want to offer an opinion on ride quality and dryness?

I will look into off site storage- what are the costs like for storage units vs. marinas. I know I don't want to keep it in the water and I prefer indoors or at worst shaded from the sun and leaves falling. I also like to come and go as I please- all hours.

The budget- I don't think I could exceed my budget with a boat that small, but that doesn't mean I want to break the bank just to be spending money. I would prefer to buy something brand new. I would only consider used if the thing was like new. When I put my old boat for sale you'll see what I mean- I try to keep it like new and I've had it 6 years. Pride of ownership and reliability/utility are the drivers for that. No sense running an old broken down boat that you can't even enjoy taking out because of the shape it's in. I also feel like I owe it to my fellow boaters not to take a boat out that isn't seaworthy, so I don't have to ruin your day asking for a tow when I break down. Wish more of us thought that way! Then I wouldn't have to give tows to people so often. I always want to ask them why they went out in a boat that should not be in the water but I never do.

I primarily fish dock light trout, but I also like sheephead in the spring and fall reds in the Pass.

I would really expand my inshore structure fishing if I wasn't in a 14 footer with a 25 horse. It is shy on freeboard for the Pass unless it's really calm and it's not super fast even with max horsepower on it. It also beats you up in chop somewhat.

I was attempting to insert a little humor into my post with the yankee boat name remark I made. I actually would consider the Whaler but I am told their quality is on the decline while the prices are sky high.

I'm off to look at the links everyone sent me. Thanks very much everyone.

Don't forget to check out a Key West boat before you buy.  I too, had size restrictions, so I had to go w/ a 17-19' boat. I looked really hard at the Carolina Skiffs, but now I couldn't be any happier with my Key West 1720 - shallow draft (8" lightly loaded to about 10" fully loaded) but the sides are tall enough to handle the pass or to take it outside of the pass (given the right conditions!!!).  Go see Kenny (aka Sequioa) at Emerald Coast - I'm sure he'll give you a great deal and be sure to tell him the PFF sent you.

Also, you might consider parking the boat in the back yard and just constructing a pole-barn style cover for it. Most HOA's are cool with outdoor structures in the back yard just as long as if they are below a certain height.

Key West 1720

My neighbor had a '99 Key West 1720. I did a fair amount of work on it rigging it. I was on the boat once. It was a very nice well built boat. It would be perfect for the fishing your interested in doing and that's what he did with it.

It would be REAL close to fit thru a standard garage door height, if it even will.

I agree with some of the other posts. Go see Kenny Mann, co-owner and service manager at Emerald Coast Marine, Sauffley Field Road, just west of Mobile Hwy. You will not find a more honest and competent boat/engine person. Emerald Coast is a Yamaha dealer. I consider Yamahas to be the best outboard available today. Kenny sells Key West, Cape Horn, Sea Swirl and Rinker.

For your intended use, I feel your best choice is a Cape Horn 17' with an appropriate sized Yamaha. My dream boat is a Cape Horn 26' with the V-8 Yammy, but I have 8 boats already and cannot part with any of them as each has it's best use.

I would stay away from Carolina Skiff if you dont want your fishing opportunities to be limited. Even their "V series" will beat the snot out of you and get you wet on top of it in anything more than a ripple. You still haven't disclosed your budget but on the lower end, I would look at Blazer Bay, Key West, Century and Cobia. Higher end, Pathfinder, Ranger, Sterling, etc. Regardless I would stay with a "bay boat or hybrid" over a typical center console (like that dreaded Cape Horn) or true flats boat. A "bay boat" will give you the versatility you are looking for with the type fishing it sounds like you do.

I personally have the Blazer 1960 and it could fit in a standard garage if it had to and was rigged for it. Let me know if you have any questions on Blazers.

Just my personal opinion: take it for what it is worth. Buy a used late model boat with a 4 stroke engine. Its a buyers market now and the market is flodded with boats for sale. If you change your mind a few years from now, you have not lost much money when you sell. I have a 16ft, Carolina Skiff with a 40 hp Yam and it tools around enywhere in sheltered waters, but I would never go through the pass even on calm days because a big motor yacht under full throttle can throw a wicked wake. Also, it is stressed wilh more than 2 persons total. Actually it rides better than a 21 ft Carolina because the beam is smaller. You should be able to get a 2 year old one for less than 10k. Then you can swap out in the future if you want. It draws 6"............. believe it or not. You are never going to get a 16-17 foot boat that rides and can be used like a 22 footer. Hope this helps. You cant park the boat in the backyard? If you have a privacy fence i would think you would be able to park a boat out back. My hoa says you arent supposed to have boats out front in plain view. What are they going to do? We have a renter in the neighborhood that parks two of his cars on the street right where a corner is and the hoa has sent him several letters, well this week the president call the ecso and they told them sorry they cant send an officer out for that. WOW.. guess ill call every day till the get tired of me calling and come out or ill get tired of calling. Check in to seeing if you can park the boat in the back yard. Btw i have a 16 horn and i use it for the bay only and it is perfect for shallows, chop, dock lights, And so on. Goodluck

Thanks so much for the replies guys. Let me answer some more questions that were posed...

My budget is not really limited. If I found one for 50K I guess I could afford it, but seriously, what kind of boat would fit in the garage and still cost that much? That's why I haven't specified a budget.

Also the backyard is not an option- I live in a waterfront community and my lot is only .15 acres, and that includes a 3 BR 2 bath house!

My favorite boat right now is the 19 ft Hydra Sport Bay Bolt, but I doubt it will fit. Probably like 40K too. I requested a quote from Bahia Mar months ago- no reply.

I could keep it in a friend's back yard, I just hate to keep my boat off site when I live 2 minutes away from Galvez Landing.

Thanks so much for all the feedback- I hope it helps other people who are looking!

Nope. You need to add 24in for the motor that hangs past the transom.

Then you have aprox 24in of trailer where the winch stand bolts to in front of the boat.

This is if your considering a swing /removable trailer tongue.

Good lord, 50K will get you a lot of boat! You can get the Key West 19' bay reef for a lot less than that. I have fished one of those for years and they have a great ride. The new sundance bay boat at wills marine is sweet too and nowhere near 50k. If you can swing hi-dry storage [around 200 per month] that is the way to go.

For those of you that keep your boat off site- how is the accessability? I like to keep odd hours especially when dock light fishing. Also, how are the rates? I can't consider Day Break- too far from Innerarity Pt. Would have to go with Holiday Harbor if I used a marina vs. a regular storage place. Can't say enough about how much I appreciate the feedback folks.

Mike,

Sell your current house, buy a new one on the water, then get whatever boat you want.  Or simply keep it at Holiday Harbor if it won't fit in your garage. I would not compromise on the boat that I wanted simply because it will not fit in my garage. Your monthly storage rates should be less than a tank of Gas.
