Anyone how many cranking amps I need for a 225hp 1994 Johnson? Starter doesnt engage, pulled it apart, seems to function properly. Wondering if I am not getting enough of battery to the starter to engage the flywheel. Just put in a new Optima Blue top, figured that would be enough. Its charged up too. Thanks ahead of time.

| Is the starter bendix (part with the gear) moving up the shaft shaft towards the flywheel at all when the starter is spinning? Check all connections, and I will assume you installed the battery correctly?

No the bendex doesnt come up at all. I think I am losing power somewhere from the battery to the starter. Its an older boat, just bought it, there is some corrosion on the terminal leads and such. Also had a problem with the Persko switch but I made my way past that yesterday, but there may be some unseen corrosion inside that. I took the starter apart to be sure the bendex wasnt frozen up. She is good to go but it seems like I am not getting enough power to spin it up to the flywheel.
So this morning I am going to clean all that corrosion off, ensure my wires are tight on the battery, if that doesnt work I need a new persko switch anyway, if that doesnt work then possibly a starter. I need to test to see if I am getting enough juice to the starter or simply take it in to get tested. I dont have a volt meter (christmas list!!)

If all connections are good, the brushes in the starter may be bad which equals buying a new starter.

Without any test equipment, you are on the right track. Narrow it down till you can't any longer.

Test by by-passing everything but the starter. Take a KNOWN good battery and a GOOD set of jumper cables and test the starter on the engine. When doing the test use the starter itself as the ground, not the engine. Can you move the starter gear up the shaft using your hand/fingers? How fast is the starter itself spinning?
