No one has even mentioned Trey Anastasio (PHISH) he's absolutely bad azz with a guitar

My list would include:  Trey Anastasio, Chapton, Jimmy Herring, Hendrix, and others (in that order).   Others include Mikey Houser, Santana, Warren Haynes, Jerry Garcia

Trey? Really?
You're nuts.
Glad to see the forgotten Jeff Beck pop up there.

Here's the list though 1-3, reverse order:
Jack White -- he's badass.
Santana/Clapton -- it's tie. I'd kill baby iguanas before I'd choose between the two.
And No. 1 w/ a bullet - Jimmy Page.

It's done. Stopping posting. This list is finished.

Most of the people who are named above would tell you the greatest is Brent Mason.

Brent Mason is my pick as well.  He is nothing short of unreal, he is the most soughtafter recording guitarist on the planet.  If you ever get to hear him play, do what you have to, but don't miss it.

Doyle Dykes hands down!  He is a Taylor guitar clinician and has a signature model with them.  I've seen him many times, insane fingerstyle guitar playing, Chet influenced but innovative.  Check a video here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaAzD3UQfNEwo

Tommy Emmanuel:  Check out this video of guitar boogie.  I hate to disagree with ya'll, but these big names ya'll drop, Hendrix, Vai, Van Halen, Clapton, King, even SRV don't even hold a candle to having the talent of so many pickers out there.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lbvSBNLLoo

There are a couple of "pop" guys that absolutely shred right now, the two that come to mind being Brad Paisley and John Mayer.  Paisley has some of the most insanely fast guitar solos you'll ever hear.

Check out his duel with Kermit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHAVE9ATu1Y

John Mayer is an amazing picker as well, and covers many Hendrix and SRV tunes flawlessly and puts his own spin on them.  He is a pretty innovative writer as well.  Check the solo in the middle of "neon".  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzsEzD2fVwE

Sorry for rambling about this subject, but guitar is the one thing I am more passionate about than fishing and diving! Great topic idea!

I gotta go with Jimi and Duanne as well but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Chuck Berry or Robert Johnson.

John Mayer is actually a VERY good guitarist. Anyone ever seen Gutrie Trapp play? He is from around here and one of the best I have ever seen in the bar scene.

Angus Young best showman
Jimmy Page great in show very inventive
Jimi Hendrix great show very inventive
Chuck Barry Showed Angus how to act on stage
Pete Townsend Good arm movement
Ron Woods Not harmed by conventional weapons
BB King
Les Paul He invented the electric guitar
Jerry Reed Super bad picker and a world class actor
Ronnie James Dio 5'4'' of rockin power
Matt Cameron Just plain good
Slash great with the guitar very inventive and smokes his cig with style
Richie Havens has 12 fingers
Willie just plain good
Steve Earle great strong hand strummer
Brian May ability to put up with Freddy's fruitiness
The Nuge great guitarist and even better with a flaming arrow
John Lee Hooker
Trey Anastasio Pseudo hippie guitar hero
The Edge
Eddie VanHalen he' a tool but he is really great

Angus is the hands down winner for overall tallent, showmanship, resistance to drugs, ability to melt your face off, and general kick assedness there isn't another guitarist that is the focus of a really super bad rock and roll show.

Picking or finger playing? Tommy and Doyle are the best at finger playing IMO. Nothing like making one guitar sound like a complete band....

ohhhhhhhhhh still dont know sorry

this thread is interesting.

It's almost as cool as asking Ron which lures to use to catch blue marlin or how to rig a single stiff rig for a Pelagic Breakfast. better yet, there's a certain amount of humor in any thread that mentions Chet Atkins.

Ya'll keep up the good fight.

Stevie Vai is hard to beat but there's a guy out there named Albert Lee that's one of the fastest and cleanest I've seen. If any of you have the Crossroads guitar festival 2007 DVD, He's on there and he burns it up! Kenny Wayne Shepherd gets my vote too but I'm a little prejudiced there since he's family. Roy Clark is hard to beat too and Jeff Beck is in a class of his own. He's on the Crossroads DVD too along with a little bass player that's real good for her age. She keeps up with him and that's a feat in itself.
