how about John Petrucci from Dream Theater?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkF4JD2rO3Q
get to 6:09 in the video and tell me that he isnt at least one of the best.
Dream Theater is one of the best bands i have ever heard, and their genre of music isnt even one that i really like.

Thanks for a great thread. This is reminding me of some names I'd forgotten.
Seeing Paco De Lucia's name reminded me of Al DiMeola. Anyone into acoustic should get their hands on "Friday Night in San Francisco" Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, & Paco DeLucia -Unreal acoustic live album

| Man that is a tough question. Roy Buchanen has always been my favorite. He is an obscure, eccentric type of a guy who ended up hanging himself in a jail cell but boy could he play. Youtube has a lot of videos of his. Check out "Hey Joe" if you go there. Duane Allman on slide guitar, Mark Knopfler [dire straits] for tone, Eddie Van Halen for pioneering a totally new way of playing a guitar.

| too many studio guitarists..... they have no soul to their music, that's why they are basically unknowns... the blues guys have depth...BB King, SRV,Robert Cray the jam guys have imagination...Jerry, Jimi, Duane Allman don't see why anybody would list Clapton or Eddie Van Halen but it's all subjective and based on what you like and your experiences. I know this will get a laugh but Prince can play anything....

| For Southern rock guitar ( a personal favorite) Duane Allman(also with Derrick and the Dominos "Layla") with Dickey Betts a close second. Check out the Allman Brothers song 'Blue Sky" http://www.last.fm/music/The+Allman+Brothers+Band/_/Blue+Sky "Duane Allman and Dickey Betts played on the bridge solo - one playing "lead" lead, the other playing "rhythm" lead. They switch up half way through - listen very carefully and you will hear them synch up on a riff for two measures or so right around 2:30 into the track. " Mark W out

| All of the guitar players listed so far are undoubtedly good, but the best I EVER heard was the great Spanish classical guitarist Andres Segovia.

| Joe Satriani, Joe Bonamasa, I liked jim capaldi from Traffic too,Sanata , well lets say he was Ok in his time, walked out on his show at this years Memphis in Mud deal. Boring.Hendrix is the king to me, saw him do his first show in the UK in Houslow when i was at school there.Poured his heart into what he playde. Davies of the Kinks was one of the most amazing rhytmn guitarists. Saw the floyd when th cray one Syd Barrett was still with them, good. Page was awesome the first time i saw him take a violin bow to a guitar. SRV could get your attention too. Any of the guys who regularly did Antones in Austin were good to just plain brilliant. The two guitarists from Wishbone Ash. Any of the guys who came out of Jeff Beck's training band, like Clapton and Page are ok as he never tollerated crappy guitar work. But right now i am listening to some Cowboy Junkies(TRINITY REVISITED) and its awesome. Its all subjective.

| Man, that's a tall order to fill! Classical guitarists include Carlos Montoya and the great Andres Segovia. Female guitarists include Sharon Wayne and Evangelos Bondounis (sp?). Jazz guitarists would include the venerable Chet Adkins and his buddy Kenny Burrell and an older model, Les Paul who used to team up with Mary Ford on some excellant jazz classics.Wes Montgomery was also a great one for jazz and R&B.Oh, and don't forget Earle Klugh and Charlie Bird, two great soloists in the classical jazz field. R&B is all there for B.B. King and Lucille!! Chist Carter and Scott Sharrad of Chesterfield fame is up there in the top part of the R&B guitarists. Rock guitarists are far too many to try to name!! Of course Hendrix who took a guitar to new highs with his right handed left stringed Stratocaster. He made a guitar do things unheard of in those days!! Then there was Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin, Steve Vai, one of Joe Satriani's greatest protege's, and Satriani himself one of the best solo guitarists ever to pick the strings. Pete Townsend and Chuck Berry when he was sober and straight, and a new guy, Jerry C. a young Asian who is one of the very best solo pickers I have ever seen!! His technique and sound makes the hair stand up on your arms when you watch one of his videos!! His rendition of "Sweeping From Heaven" is unbelieveable!! Too many more to mention!!

Xanadu (8/20/2008)
JoeZ (8/19/2008) Trey? Really?
You're nuts.
Glad to see the forgotten Jeff Beck pop up there.
Here's the list though 1-3, reverse order:
Jack White -- he's badass.
Santana/Clapton -- it's tie. I'd kill baby iguanas before I'd choose between the two.
And No. 1 w/ a bullet - Jimmy Page.
It's done. Stopping posting. This list is finished.
I agree. Phish was stoned. They're not any better musically than most dorm jam bands.
no way....listen to some of their stuff live......particularly, "you enjoy myself"
branches away from the traditional blues riffs of king, clapton, vaughn etc.
i think eddie van halen has to be near the top......."eruption" is incredible
"here's to swimmin' with bowlegged women"

Shiznik (8/19/2008) B.B. KIng, Angus Young, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Richie Sanborn, Eric Clapton, Robin Trower,Randy hodes, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and many, many more!Out of all the replies, I'm leaning towards Shiznik's List...especially Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and SRV.
