Well my Dad is coming in town this weekend and I just need to take him out to catch some fish.  I am a diver/spearfisher that can hardly ever catch a dagum fish with a hook and line.  But the one thing I used to always enjoy was just catching kings in the pass.  I used to just troll stretches in and out the pass between the bouy along the drop off in the early morning and catch kings every time.

Are the kings nearshore?  I have been out of the fishing scene for so long, I am going to have to re-learn a few of my old techniques.  If it's nice, I plan to go out let him play with some reef donkeys.  He's mostly an inshore/flats fishing guy from south Florida.  So I want to get him offshore some.  But the kings were always fun to catch in the pass.

Anyone doing anygood on kings etc... trolling in the pass?

ive been trolling the pass and had no luck with kings. been catching the spanish early and around tide change. a safe bet is the shark hookups. i have been anchoring just outside the turning basin to where the current lets my bait fall just into the basin.chumming is not neccessary but it does help.went out a week ago and caught 7 in about 45min. biggest to 50#. whatever you do keep an eye on that storm. the redfish bite at nite has been quite good.this week i was planning on going out at about 5pm and staying till 9pm in the pass going for sharks and reds. Whatever you do i am sure you will have a good time just being out on the water

I haven't heard of the kings making it to the pass in numbers yet. It might be a little hike but there are some kings out by paradise hole. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a couple by the 3 barges but that's just a guess. Or the Mass. if there's a lot of bait.  Good Luck

have plans to try for them on saturday, the waters awfull hot so there probally deep in the water column. my plan is to get menhaden and alwys. anchor and chum near the buyline and let the baits drift down or add a split shot or 2 to let it sink down. I hope this works, don't feel like running out far (but the aj's do sound fun!!!)

I'm hoping the pressure drop and all that scientific stuff get the mackrel fired up the respond very well to that stuff, anyways good luck, dont let Dad down!!

I have had absolutely no luck in the pass this year. All my luck has been about ten to twelve miles out trolling deep diving planers(#2,#3) with spoons over top of the public reefs. Some as named in previous comments. I have had some bite on skirted king rigs with the cigar minnow hooked in tow trolled on the surface but not nearly as productive as years before.

Keep an eye on that storm though. May not be fun to even be out there this sat. Good luck though....

Thanks for the advice fellas.  Friday may be our fishing day.  I just hope I can put him on some sort of fish.  I just get so impatient.  I like my instant gratification of sinking a steel shaft in the fish from my speargun.
