when fishing for kings on palafox must you baloon fish or can you just free line baits as if you were on the pier do they come in that close?

I would suggest baloon fishing.  However I have seen a 27lb king caught 10 feet from the water edge out there.  So I'm sure you could still catch one.....but I think it may take a while.  You can't see them like you can on the beach pier.

They do come pretty close in but the bait always wants to swim toward the seawall.

A stiff North wind and outgoing tide keep them out and about -- making them easy targets.

i've had kings sky on my baits so close to the wall, i thought they would hit me in the face.... you're better off using a baloon... the secret is to hook your bait behind the dorsal fin and drop him right over the wall, (DO NOT CAST!), keep constant pressure on your bait, lettiing out line 1 or 2 loops at a time.... this way, your bait will swim south.
