Saturday 9.27.08 3 Mile Bridge

It has been a while since I have had a chance to drown a gulp do to moving to a new place, a busy schedule at work, etc... So I finally had a spare moment Saturday night and made plans to hit 3 mile with my Dad and Brother. We left Pace around 6:45 and launched at 17th by 7:15. We took a few minutes at the launch fort my Brother to net a few pin fish, and a half dozen big glass minnows, and then off to the bridge. It was a little choppy on the way out but after about an hour the wind really died down and it was beautiful. There were boats out everywhere so I had to settle for a spot I don't usually fish, but hey at least I was on the boat!!! We all hooked up a gulp on a jig head, and tossed a big pin fish out on a circle hook and let him sit in the rod holder. My Brother instantly landed a 17 inch white trout and it was on. The white trout bite was on fire, and the skipjacks were out in force as well. I didn't take any pics of the trout while we were catching them and the ones we kept (a cooler full fo sure) went home with my Brother so I didn't take the traditional fish on the table pic at the end of the night either...sorry but I'm sure you guys and gals have seen plenty of white trout anyways...I did take a pic of a fish I have never seen until Saturday night so anyone who knows what it is let me know...It was long and skinny kinda like an eel with a tail like a snake and lots of teeth...oh yeah and it was so shiny it looked like a chrome bumper....

Here is another pic a little closer up

I tossed it back, and it swam back home...all fish were caught on various gulp, only one hit on the live bait and it spit it right back out No sign of the reds either maybe they are in the shallow water these days? All and all it was a great trip with my family!!!!

Monday Evening 9.29.08 Blackwater Bay

I managed to get off work at 3 yesterday afternoon, and that is great since I am usually stuck there until 7. So I decided to take advantage of my good fortune, and hit the bay. I put the Boat in at the shell pile at about 5:30 and zipped out to the mouth of the river. I started around the grass where i saw TONS of mullet and a little bait. I tried the area for about 30 mins with only one bite, so I ran out under the interstate bridge and went to a spot I like over by yellow river. On the way out the bay was slick as glass and I saw tons of bait on the top. I eased up to one pod and tossed my net and it turned out to be small glass minnows just big enough to stay in the net. Well no luck at the 2nd spot so I decided to go back to the bait and try fishing around it. Well now not only was there about 10 schools of glass minnows but there was also a big school of larger bait fish mixed in with them. I'm not sure what the other school was cause I never could get close enough to net any before they spooked. I got in front of the bait pods and just drifted and let em come to me. I fished to rods with jig heads and gulp and I caught about 20 fish total all white trout, specks and a croaker. I also hung a big fish that ran alot of drag for a few seconds and then spit the jig. It didn't feel like a red maybe a big Jack???? Anyways the bait would pass me by and it was too cool, when they got close to the boat it looked like it was raining, the way they were popping the top of the water. After they passed out of reach I would start the boat and move in front of em again and catch more trout. Well it was about 6:45 and starting to get darkish so I packed up my gear and uh oh....the old glastron wouldn't start!@#$%$%^ I turned it over and over with no luck as it was getting darker and darker. As the sun was almost completely down I scan the bay to get my location so I can anchor and call for help and I notice that I am right in the channel...yikes....so I decide anchoring might be a bad idea. At this point I am frantically calling all my buddies and relatives who have a boat to see if they can rescue me. When I see bright amber lights heading my way, I figure it is either an alien or some guys floundering, luckily it was the latter. They were 2 nice fellahs from Opp Alabama down here to stick some flatties and the towed me the fish camp at the end of Ward Basin Road...WHEEEW...what a trip...Anyways I made it back home in one piece  and now I've gotta fix the 'ol evenrude.

Good luck (better than mine I hope) and good fishing,

Glastronix

Glastronix  have you considered a trolling motor?  I think I  just saw one in the  for sale section cheap/  It may help not only in times of distress..but to troll around in and out the  3MB, docks, and  shallow areas etc.......other than that ....good report man...glad you made it back...thanks for the pic. and the info it provided.  Now I know  what a ribbon fish is good for.  Thanks...

Yep, Ribbonfish, last time I saw one it was hanging off my brother-in-law's big toe.  Nasty biters. Great for bait and trolling.

Great read. Nice to see you getting on the water. Now I know what they look like as well. wierd per-historic looking thing.

Thanks for the post and the pic. I haven't been out to 3mb in quite some time, maybe when the water cools the reds will be back out there.

I have been thinking about getting one, but cash is a little tight right now, we got a new baby on the way! Maybe by next spring I can get one and set it up.

Everybody calls them ribbon fish, but I think the true name is cutlass fish.
