We recently purchases a used castnet that has red tape all around the weights.  Is there some reason the red tape is on there; any advantage to leaving it there?

Don't want to remove it if it provides some advantage.

When on the east coast, we put duct tape around the perimeter to allow for maximum spread when shrimp casting in deepwater.

Ditto what he said

In  LA I saw people put tape around the lead line when casting for shrimp, to spread the net out as it sinks.

Use to get some real nice ones in Oak Harbor, Slidell - 10 to 12 count.

It does slow down the sink rate, if you are going for small fish, finger mullet or bull minows- go ahead and remove it

i dye the bottom 4 inches of my nets red, so when i throw on a big ball of cigar minnows, they will ball up in the center of the net... this way i don't have a bunch try and run under the net before it hits the bottom.

Thanks guys.  I figured there was a good reason for it if someone took the time to do it.  Always appreciate your advice.
