| I just got my first boat, so I'm at your mercy. One of the problems is, with the prop in the water, when the prop engages while throttling up the motor dies. I can trim it up to where the prop is half out of the water and it engages fine, then I trim down to operate. My second problem is it seems to run slow. I open the throttle all the way without satisfaction. I don't have anyway to tell how fast I'm going, but I know I should be going at least twice as fast. I have a friend that has a 75 hp that hauls a**. So, I know mine should be close to that. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you plan to do this yourself, start with a compression check and ignition check. From there you will need to narrow it down to what system (compression, ignition, fuel, other) that is causing the problem. You can have it diagnosed just about anywhere for a minimum charge and then decide to repair yourself or have the shop do it. | I just realised that the motor is actually a 97' model, not a 93'. Looking at the parts diagrams and lists, they're the same motor. Or am I wrong?

Basically identical. Only a few differences. Testing procedure is the same.

The way I understand it, the powerpack on the motor controls the voltage to the coils under load, so if it's running low on power under load it could be the power pack.
I would first check compression on all cylinders and if compression seems ok, then I would look at getting a power pack.
The other thing to check is to make sure there is spark going to all cylinders. It may not be running on 1 or 2 cylinders....
Sometimes if you crank the motor or run it in the dark with the cover/hood off of it you can see if some of your spark plug wires are "arcing/grounding out" that's one quick way to check for spark misses.

| The carbs could also need cleaning. Thats how my boat acts when the main jets get clogged. It only takes a TINY piece of debris or oil residue to clog the little hole

First thing, remove the prop and check for line or string wraped around the shaft that could bind the motor down!!

| okay, about the only thing I've done to it so far is put in a new fuel tank and run Techron fuel system cleaner through it. It didn't fix the problem of running slow, but while I was out, I watched the RPM's this time and it only runs at 2000 with the throttle wide open. However, the Techron did solve the problem of having to start it with starting fluid before hitting the ramp. After it warmed up, it didn't have a problem starting. I checked the compression and it was about 120 on each cylinder. I also noticed that it doesn't have a fuel filter on it. I bought one to put on before running it again. Also while it was idling, I squeezed the prime bulb and it did not rev any faster. So, does anybody else think it's a power pack issue or is it just a fuel issue. Thanks for the info

Fuel is the most likely problem other than prop. The control units on Yamaha's are very rare to go out.

Sounds like the carbs need cleaning. Bring by if you are near Navarre.
