| I have been in contact with Marine Fisheries, keeping up on the Red Fish issues, and forwarded them some of our recent pics, from shallow water catches to deep water bull reds. They loved the pics and may use some in their publications. They were impressed for the most part with the way we handle our fish and that is why they liked the pics. I was asked to forward this request in as friendly and positive a manner as I possibly can.... "One comment on the pictures: we discourage anglers from holding their catch by the throat as in “bullred 5” as that can cause internal damage by being held vertically like that. Perhaps you could help us encourage safe fish handling like the other photos, which is the main reason we’d like to use them." They also answered a question about the difference between males and females, and spawning...FYI... The answer to your questions: - only the males produce the drumming sound, typically associated with spawning, here is a blurb from the Species Profile from 1985 attached:
“The spawning behavior of the red drum in captivity was described by Guest and Lasswell (1978). Drumming sounds produced by mature males began near dusk. Males increased their drumming intensity as they swam close to females near the bottom of the tank. Each female that was ready to spawn was attended by several males that nudged the female's abdomen……The drumming and nudging peaked between 2130 and 2140 hr.” 2. Males and females are indistinguishable from the outside. The only way to distinguish is by looking at the gonads, males are generally white and stringy and females are orangish and plump.

| Thats interesting that they were impressed with the way you hold your (am guessing) oversize redfish and that they want to promote the proper way to hold large fish out of the water by showing pictures of them. Reason its interesting to me is they would not include my guide website on their list of guides BECAUSE of photos on the site showing obviously oversize redfish. They stated that they should not be removed from the water, sent me a page long position paper on the subject, and that if I would take the offending pictures off my website they would reconsider listing my guide service. Just find it interesting....

I have a question for them, or anyone who may know: If I land a world record contender in FL waters, how do I get my catch verified without incurring a big ass fine?
