Anybody read any good books lately? After Saturday Bama wont be on TV for a few weeks so i gotta find something to pass the time and I love reading. Theres not a lot of fishing to do here in Tuscaloosa, I think the red snapper and grouper have gone extinct up here or something...

I am currently reading "A Conspiracy of Paper" by David Liss.

Historical Fiction.  It takes place in London and its about the origin of banknotes and the stock market.  It's a mystery thriller believe it or not.  I'm 3/4 of the way through it and would recommend it.

Go Gators!!

For good escape lit, pick up anything by Carl Hiaasen. Very entertaining. Start off with Skin Deep.

I just read Defiance. It was a pretty good book. It was about the Bielski Otriad who saved 1200 Jews during WW2 by making camps in the forrest. Pretty cool how they managed to survive and the things they were doing in the forrest to stay alive. Its amazing what you can come up with when you have no other option

Or start with Double Whammy... that one's about murder and corruption around the pro bass fishing circuit. Hiaasen has a really twisted sense of humor, and I love it.

Skinny Dip was good too, Basket Case was ok. The guy is not the best writer, but his stories are Wildly entertaining.

You can't go wrong with Randy Wayne White.  Similar to Carl H but better in my opinion.

A good series that I read years ago and wish I could find was called "Casca the eternal mercenary"  it is a series on the soldier that stuck a spear into Jesus when he was on the cross to finally kill him so that he could leave and as Jesus looked  down at him and told him "soldier as ye are now so shall ye remain until I come again" so he is doomed to live eternally as a soldier until the second comming of Christ.  It goes from the Roman wars all the way to Vietnam.

Even better in my opinion also. Doc Ford kicks ass! He also has a bunch of books out under the name of Randy Striker.

The old Carl H. books are really good (tourist season, double whammy, strip tease, Native Tongue, sick puppy, skin tight, etc.) Most of his recent work leaves something to be desired.

If you like Florida history and crime novels you also need to try Tim Dorsey. If you read his series you need to start with the first one and read them in order. He is right up there with Hiassen and White in my book.

Bob Morris also writes a pretty good florida based series that takes place across the caribbean and bahamas. It's about an ex-miami dolphin football player who runs an exotic palm farm and goes on crazy adventures with his buddy Boggy, the last surviving descendant of the Carib Indians.

A good quick read is John Grisham's "Playing for pizza".  I was stationed in Italy and it brought back some old thoughts.  It's a good book.

I just read Key Lucky by Robert Tacoma.  This is his 5th book and the best yet.  Go to Amazon.com and see what they say about his books.  I've read them all.

I even got a bit part in this one  This is the only thing I have been in since I appeared in "Boogie Nights" but that was a movie.  Surely ya'll saw me in that one?  (I was only in the very last scene.)

Robert Tacoma will be right up there with Hiassen and White soon.  I certainly hope so.

Life is too short to catch little fish.

I ordered a few Tim Dorsey novels after I finished the last Hiaasen. Haven't been able to get into them yet, but is Florida Roadkill the first one in the series? I'm going to get a few of those Randy White novels. Just looked him up on amazon. He's got quite a few!

Florida Roadkill is the first one he wrote, but Triggerfish Twist is a prequel that takes place before Florida Roadkill. You can read either one first, it doesn't really matter. He only wrote Triggerfish Twist because he killed off some characters in Florida Roadkill, and wanted to write some more about them. Orange Crush is the only one that wasn't that good IMO, but it was alright. His new book, Nuclear Jellyfish, is about to come out.

Tim Dorsey and Randy Wayne White both have a lot of books out, my library has them all. Along with the entire John D. McDonald collection, the original florida fiction author.
