| Hello, I'm head down at the end of July and I'm interested in catching some fish! (I know....who isn't) I mostly have done surf fishing, but I have read some interesting things on the inshore fishing. A couple years ago I took a charter around Ono Island and caught some very nice specks. Unfortunately, this year I can't afford the price of the charter. I'm just happy to be able to go..... Last year I hit the Gulf Shore Yacht Club piers, the Fort Morgan Pier, and a spot I heard about near the ferry and caught some croakers, but that was about it. This year I'm looking for some guidance. Can anyone suggest a good spot to put my 13 yr old on something? He loves coming down there, but last year we were skunked for the most part and he would like to catch something this year. Also, what should I be targeting around that time of year? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!!

| The new pier MAY be open by then. To entertain a 13 yo, the hottest action for Spanish and Bluefish is at daybreak, from first good light until the sun is on the water (pray for a cloud). Past that, I would find out what is hitting and target that species. If you're lucky that will be king. A 13 yo will not be enthralled by catching bait, but it will keep him entertained and busy and make him popular with the other fishermen on the pier - not a bad thing, then hand him the rod when you get a king on. If the pier is not open try the Perdido Pass seawall at daybreak, be there with a line in the water at first light. After the sun gets up the action usually slows, but not always. Spanish, blues, and ladyfish on a spoon or gotcha will entertain most 13 yos. Main thing is that most of them tend to bore pretty easily so you want to go when the action is good. Nothing will turn a youngster off fishing faster than going when they aren't biting.
WARNING! This post is by an old fart with a dingy old boat who dreams about fishing more than he fishes. I gladly share what I know (or think I know) and gladly read what others have to share especially if it is different from what I say.
