| im purchasing a 12 gauge pump that can fit slugs and of course buck shot im goin huntin with it in Tyndall Airforce Base its the remengton 12 gauge express pump can you shoot a deer with it, without a scope with buckshot or slug in the forty yard range

I'd say no, because slug guns normally come with imp choke barrels - not the best choke for 40 yrd buckshot hits . The best set-up would be a barrel with choke tubes , full choke for buckshot and a rifled choke for slugs .
Pattern you gun to see which load it likes the best . Stick with 00 and 000 buck since the larger pellets retain more energy downrange . I personally do not like Remington buckshot because it doesn't penetrate as well as the Winchesters' , but maybe your gun will at least pattern them as well. Use 10" paper plates and see how many pellets hit . 5+ is good, 9 is great and if they all hit, do not get rid of that gun !

If you want to use buckshot, you need to try the federal premium with flite control, it will put all 9 pellets in a 6-8 in area from 15yd with a 20in open choke, have not try it in any thing else. jj

| I would recommend purchasing a Remington 870 pump with two barrels. The first barrel would be a 26" vent rib barrel with screw in chokes for all around shooting. The second barrel would be a fully rifled slug barrel with a cantilever scope mount rail for deer. I shoot this set-up and really like it. I have a 3x9 Bausch and Lomb 3000 (use to have a 3x9 Leupold Vari-Xiii) mounted to the fully rifled barrel. I can shoot under a 4" group from a rest at 100 yards with remington copper solid slugs (factory claims under 3" groups).I want to try the Hornady SST's they claim under 2.5 inch groups at 200 yds.

It's the exact set up I have, different scope. My groups are 1.5" using the Hornady SST. Hasting slugs works great also.

| I would not hunt deer with shot!!!!!!!!....use deer slugs only, the cheap ones are fine too,up north (Ohio) thats all we can use....except for handguns and muzzleloaders.....depending on the choke of the barrel ...improved cyl or bigger would be the best....but I do know people that have used full choke barrels too....just not very good on the barrel. Just try different makes to see what your gun likes....the slugs all shoot different!!!
