Well i wanted to say hi to all on PFF! I am new to this area and i have a 17 foot nitro. I dont really know where to take it to fish inshore. I am not looking for any sweet spots but was wondering if anybody could help me out and let me know of any spots that will produce some specs or red.            Thanks and again HI to all.

Blackwater has been holding some good specks and reds.

i live on the west side of pensacola and i am new to the salt water. I was in Arizona where i spent most of my time bass fishing.  Since i have been out here i was told that fishing for bass and red are really close to each other.

If you live on the west side you don't want to drag your boat all the way to the river. We caught two slot reds in Bayou Grande by the bridge going to the navy base on Wednesday, and could have caught more if we wanted. You can put in at Navy Point, although you have to be careful because technically you are not aloud to fish near the bridge.

There are plenty of place to fish on the west side.

Blackwater bay has been very bad the last few weeks. The weather over the last month has really messed up the river system. I wouldnt waste my time there right now especially since you are not familar with all the hot spots. If your just looking for some action I would suggest you take your boat to the 3 mile bridge and bump Gulps off the bottom on a 1/4oz jig head. You will get all the redfish and trout action you want right now.

Also, the sheepshead have moved in thick and are all over the rock jetties around Ft pickens and ft mcrea. Use a 1oz circle carolina rig style with a live shrimp and you will get plenty of redfish and sheepshead action.

G-rat,

If you want to meet me at Outcast bait and tackle this weekend (while I'm not fishing myself) I will show you what you need to get as far as tackle and how to rig it. I will also bring my maps and show you where to launch and where everyone is catching redfish, sheephead, drum, trout, etc. It isn't really a secret, but having someone show you on a map where to fish will be a big help. It would also be safer if someone with local knowledge of the water went over your planned route with you while looking at a map.

If you're addicted to bass fishing, Pensacola has a few good bass clubs.  Some of which are affilitated w/ the Alabama Federation.  I've attached some information re a great bass club that I found back in the fall.  It meets at Olive Baptist Church this Sunday at 445.   The next tournament is on Blackwater on the 29th.

Anyway, same tactics apply in inshore saltwater as freshwater, meaning fish holding to structure.  Grass flats, bars, bridges, pilings, sunken stuff.  If you love pitching docks, then the west side is the place to be @ night in the summer.  Also, I imagine you probably have a ton of top water baits that chug and walk the dog.  Sweet on trout and redfish.  Spinnerbaits also good for reds (white and chartreuse).  Also, I compare finess fishing in freshwater (trick worms/Senkos) to fishing Gulp Shrimp and DOAs for trout and red fish.

The thing that is bad about living on the west side for me is:  I live w/n 7 miles of 3 boat ramps, 2 of which are 3 miles or closer. Sherman Field, Bayou Grande, Innerarity Point @ Hub Stacy's That means: fishing after work, on Saturday morning before the kids get up, after church on Sunday and whenever else I can slip away after doing my chores.  It's like feeding an addiction.

But I digress....

Give me a shout if you're interested in fishing the Olive Baptist tournament at the end of the month.

JP

Hey G-Rat welcome to the forum. Here you will find a wealth of informaiton on here. Since you are on the west side. I hit the grass flats in Big Lagoon as well as just across from Sherman Cove Marina on the Navy Base for specks and Reds. When the water hits 75 I hit the lights and docks near Ono Island at night with live shrimp either freeline with no wieght or a small popping cork. Use the lightest line you can get by with, P-Line XL is a great brand and, A Flourocarbon is probably the best for a leader for about 24 inches in length. Good luck. I like the south area of Big Lagoon, plus your near the pass if you choose to fish deeper water. Use Google Earth and you can get a good idea of the sand bars, rock jetties, and grass flats. Good Luck. You will find alot of info about using artificials as well as live bait. The big difference of fishing fresh water and salt water that I have found out is how to use the tides. Do alittle reading and you will do fine. Welcome Aboard.
